This is really weird, how come the ps3's that aren't even online or connected to internet or are running on an old FW getting affected from this

or was the internal clock programmed to have a srew up on a specific date

Exactly, Thats why I am concerned. :samui:

How on earth PS3's which were'nt connected to internet got affected from this and on very same day? Does anyone thinks Heavy Rain has got to do something with it or any other game ? :scratchchin::panic:

No further updates from Sony yet

Because it is an internal issue with the system's code. Since the launch of the system, this is the first non-leap calendar year and hence the ps3 could not recognize 1st of March today as it thinks it is 29th Feb but there do not exists such a date in the month of feb this year and hence its whole date-system is screwed. The same thing happened to a few other hardwares in the past aswell and MS Zune player being the biggest one affected. SO, if it is indeed the case, the system will recover as soon as this day gets over i.e when 2nd March starts. And if it does not then Sony would have to release a firmware update.

These are the theories doing the rounds. Also, while all your data will be restored when this issue gets resolved. The trophies that you acquired since your last sync with PSN might get lost! This however is not certain.

The best thing is to wait till 2nd March starts. IF this continues even then, then yea- YOU r screwed up bad!!!

Thankfully, only first-gen ps3(PHATS(20,40 gigs mostly) are getting affected. SO SLIMS are safe which mean I am safe...thanks jebus!

I hope all of you get everything back in working order soon. :panic:

so can we still play games and stuff ?? cause i dont care sh*t about trophies. If it only affects trophy listing and does not affect the actual playing of games then i am fine, of course playing online is a diff matter and it should be resolved asap for that

This is not true, IMO it has nothing to do with dates.

If you are thinking by "4th year-leap year" logic, 2008 was a leap year it should have got screwed on 29th Feb 2008.

It's a GO for offline games and other content which has nothing to do with PSN or trophies.

I have been playing demos, then Folklore and one odd game more. It's working smooth.

So go enjoy your older games people. This is prolly the only time you will get to pop in old games and give them a quick run. You have approximately 10hours to finish you backlog.

A multitude of debug consoles – crucial to the development of current PS3 projects – have been thrown into a rebooting cycle, due to an endlessly-looping error message.

It is said that when certain PS3 retail consoles attempt to connect to the internet, the platform shows error messages and are unable to connect to the PlayStation Network.

However, a Joystiq report has been flooded by claims that even offline consoles are being struck down – with the system’s clock reverting to 12/31/1999 and causing data-corrupting errors.

The issue seems to revolve around February 29th. Or rather the fact that there is no February 29th this year. All issues starting popping up around 6:30 EST today, so hopefully all date issues should be fixed by aroudn the same time tomorrow. If not, we may have to wait for a firmware update from Sony, which will be quite troublesome if nobody can connect to the network!

The going theory is that the PS3 is storing some form of date in GMT, then modifying that to get whatever you see in the on-screen clock. That modification process seems to be fine--the system can take 2/28/2010, 9PM GMT, add four hours, and get 3/1/2010, 1AM random time zone.

What's apparently effed, as speculation goes, is when the internal GMT-tracking rolls over to 3/1. It's either not rolling, or rolling to 2/29, at which point a system tries to add/subtract from 2/29, which it can't do because the front-end calendar doesn't have a 2/29/2010, and sh*t explodes. Seemed to happen around 4PM PDT, which I think is 12AM GMT, so.

And the PS3 launched in 2006; it's hit 4 2/28s so far. 2007 and 2009 were odd-numbered years; 2008 was an even, and a leap year. 2010 is the first even non-leap-year the system's been around for. If some sort of base-level math is choking on itself, it may have ruled out the odd 2007 and 2009 successfully, but is convinced the even 2010 is a leap year (this part I'm less sure of, but is why leap year could theoretically come into play at some point.)

Everyone READ this stuff and take a chill pill. Don't press the panic button. Just wait a couple of more hours. PLAYING any games even offline right now is not advisable if ur system has been affected!
