PS3 Disappears Off Shelves In Wake Of God Of War III

One figured that God of War III would have a big impact on PlayStation 3 sales and although we won't have the official numbers until next month, the lack of PS3 systems at major retailers is telling.

Sony has mentioned a hardware shortage due to intense demand for the system (especially after the likes of Heavy Rain) and the launch of SCEA Santa Monica's masterpiece isn't helping availability. Many retailers say they're sold out of the PS3; according to Punch Jump, the 120GB model held a "backordered status" at GameStop.com, and you couldn't even buy the 250GB version. Both models were out of stock at Amazon.com, and you couldn't find either PS3 at Best Buy, which also claims a "sold out" status. Right now, Sony's machine is very tough to come by, which is in stark contrast to late 2006 or early 2007, when you couldn't give one away. Of course, at that time, barely a few million PS3s were floating around the world; now, Sony has revealed that worldwide sales of the console are nearing 34 million, which is only a scant 5 million behind the competing Xbox 360.

Of course, most of you already have the PS3 so this news won't be a problem. However, what about all those other poor saps vainly searching around for a console when, by all rights, they should've already had one? Oh, we feel for them...

Looks like Sony themselves didn't expect GOW III to sell many consoles........

Not really and the reason is not God of War 3. PS3 slims have been in very low stock since the time they got released across different countries. God of War 3 is not to blamed. Its the low production by Sony which is also a good excuse for them to show why they had such low NPD numbers last month.

Source or Fail...

For once give them credit, where it is due...games like heavy rain and GOW3 are def system sellers, well i will buy a system just to play one of those two games...

March 11, 2010 - Sony continues to feel the burn from "tight" PlayStation 3 retailer supply. The post-holiday sales remain down since December when the company saw record-breaking U.S.sales of 1.36 million consoles.

"There continues to be incredible demand for PlayStation 3, but tight inventory is definitely having an impact on recent sales numbers," said Patrick Seybold, Sr. Director of Corporate Communications in a statement given to IGN.

Today's February U.S. sales results saw Sony move 360,000 PlayStation 3 units for the month. The company has sold 637, 000 in the U.S. in the first two months of the year.

The company isn't too worried, however, as it expects its first-party offerings for the rest this year will give a much-needed boost to PlayStation 3 sales as retail stock is replenished.

"This year will once again showcase how deep and broad our content offerings are with breakout titles like Heavy Rain, which ranked in the top ten in February with only a week of sales in the month," he added. "God of War III which will be a multi-million unit seller and hardware driver is launching later this month, followed by ModNation Racers, Gran Turismo 5, SOCOM 4 and many more."

I had heard a person stating this over Rage3D boards too. At first I thought it was a joke as being in a state like California, this guy wasn't able to get the PS3 slim. However, it turns out he visited nearly 7-8 stores and pretty much all were out of stock. :threatenlumber:

I got mine from Croma showroom and they had plenty of stock. Infact, it seemed like they had just refreshed their stock.

well this justifies that even if they have limited stock coming in you need games like GOW3 and HR to move the systems, but all said and done sony should get there act together...Kratos can do what snake and drake could not :threatenlumber:

I did buy my PS3 to play Heavy Rain, but Uncharted happened to me...twice.. before that. And I am so loving Sony's 3rd and 1st party exclusives.

If devs are finding the cell power more effective to create stuff like HR then be it, just go buy a PS3, it deserves gamers' money. :threatenlumber:

Amen brother!

After God of War Collection's release, I suppose people who wanted to get a PS2, might have ditched the plan and got the PS3. This shows how big Sony's first party titles really are and how they can be hardware sellers.
