Well its going to be IVG server alright...if not then its going to be KBK (Kill Bobby Kotick :P)

And we've already discussed over having a Japanese server, infact all the SEA COD players are going for the Japanese server, what's more the latency to Japanese server is faster as well (I get ~200ms ping to Japanese servers)....but then you have to consider that its Japan we are talking about where English isn't very popular.

EDIT: I see they have India in the suggestion list (but not Singapore ?), how about we spam suggestions ?

Won't guys like Fragnetics set up servers once the game is out? Theyre servers are awesome.

peace

Not unless they strike a deal with Gameservers.org for setting up a South Asian server.

gameservers have already stated that south east asia will not have a datacenter for black ops servers, so our only hope is that some proper gaming service provider like e-club/fragnetics from around singapore make a deal with them. i'm hopeful this will happen, but at the same time, not a lot of other providers around the world have managed this, which tells me that it's not as easy to get done as it sounds.

ok so about renting a server...

first question is why? the biggest reason is that a lot (probably most) servers will have a maxping autokick enabled. which means that if a player's ping is over a certain number, they get autokicked. that number is usually 150 or less. in our particular case, finding any server with a ping of less than 150 is going to be nigh impossible with the restrictions they've imposed on hosting cities. having our own server would bypass that completely... no kick for higher pings means you'd never have to face that issue. of course, it's always more fun to play with people you know, although who knows how long that would last :P

luckily, it's fairly cheap to rent a server for this game. in fact, it's unbelievably cheap. 15$ per month for an 18 slot ranked server, or 24$ per month for a 24 slot unranked server. i'm assuming everyone will want to start out with ranked play until they've leveled up enough and mods come out, which is why getting a ranked server makes sense right now. 700 bucks a month for a server is very reasonable, and if we can even get 3-4 people onboard to contribute, it takes it down to about 200 bucks a month per person, which is just really cheap. multiple contributions for the server are not actually required at all because the pricing is so reasonable, but it would be pretty cool if a couple of others chipped in.

been thinking about server location for a while now. the 2 obvious choices are japan or western europe... as far as physical distance goes, both tokyo and cities in western europe are approximately the same distance away. anecdotal testing of pings across servers doesn't give a conclusive result as to which place will be better. i've personally tested pings and asked some friends to do so as well... it seems to me that, on the whole, pings aren't all that different between the 2 places (expectedly). whatever deviation i've seen is within an acceptable margin anyway e.g. a variation of 15ms doesn't matter at all when you're already talking about pings of 170. there are other factors to consider as well... whether a server lives or dies depends solely on whether people play in it. there's no arguing that a european server stands a higher chance of being populated simply because there will be far more players there than japan. another consideration is the language.... while you can ask players to adhere to a particular language, the odds of getting an english speaking server are higher in europe, especially considering japanese servers will serve all of eastern asia. so as of now, i'm leaning towards getting a european server, probably hosted in london. amsterdam, paris, milan are also good choices but i feel the language issue could come up there too. the difference in latency between a server in england and france/italy will also be fairly negligible.

so that's the general thinking as of now. the idea is to get a server for a month to see how it goes, whether the location choice was correct, whether it is populated etc. would be good to have players from here play there as much as possible (you'll never get kicked unless you're cheating :P). get maybe 3-4 server admins to start with, see how it goes from there.

all this is still a fairly nebulous idea, i'd be interested to hear your thoughts about it.

i talked to barney from intencity earlier this afternoon... he told me black ops console versions are going to be delayed here. apparently, wwcdroms will get the game on the 10th, then ship it out to retailers, then those retailers will ship them out to customers. if this is how it goes, i imagine one would be lucky to get the game before the weekend if you have ordered it from one of the ivg vendors. people getting it off the shelf will get it first i guess.

Robbers Nab Over 100 Copies of Black Ops

Four cases of the game stolen from GameStop.

November 7, 2010

The Baltimore Sun reports two men armed with handguns stole four cases of Activision's Call of Duty: Black Ops video game, cash, and gaming systems from a GameStop store at the Bel Air shopping center in Harford County, Md. late Saturday night.

The robbers made off with more than 100 copies of Black Ops, which is set to go on sale this Tuesday. The local sheriff's office is asking residents to contact them if they come across early copies of the game.

Call of Duty: Black Ops goes on sale November 9 for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, Wii, and DS.

 Some people just couldn't wait.

sam, your knowledge of the teletubbies is... disturbing.

Did you actually confuse Barney (everyone's favorite, lovable purple dinosaur) for a Teletubby?!

EDIT 1: This game will unlock in 1 day and 3 hours... wth! Earlier today, it was just '16 hours' away... I think the timer's gone up :/

EDIT 2:
