Man In The Box
The recently revealed Xbox LIVE update for the Xbox 360 has launched today at approximately 11:20am GMT, offering gamers the opportunity to utilise USB storage devices, in conjunction with Xbox 360 proprietary accessories. Available now in most major territories, the update will begin when first connecting to Xbox LIVE via your Xbox 360 console. The update itself isn’t particularly lengthy, and though a few other changes and modifications have been made, the only real functionality alteration is that of the widely publicised USB storage device compatibility. From today, Xbox 360 gamers can utilise up to 16 GB of storage space on any USB device for storing profiles, game saves, demos and more. Up to tow devices can be used simultaneously, and in conjunction with any proprietary devices already connected to the Xbox 360 console. Upon downloading the update, gamers must format their storage device prior to use. Heading to the Memory window on the Xbox 360 Dashboard, an option to perform such an operation will now be available. Formatting the device takes only a few minutes, and once finished the system will conduct a one Electronic Theatre Imagetime performance and integrity check to confirm the drive is working properly. In total, Electronic Theatre managed to format a 5 GB USB Flash drive in under four minutes, and 16 GB of capacity on a 150 GB external harddisk drive in under five minutes. The device then work with PC and Mac systems in a similar manner to many smartphones, with any such reserved space in accessible but the remaining capacity useable as normal. Prior to the launch of the Xbox LIVE update, Microsoft warned that mechanical drives may offer a degraded performance to Flash memory, and in Electronic Theatre’s experience so far, this foible does ring true. Although negligible, our external harddisk drive did take an additional few moments to load gamer profiles and the demo version of the forthcoming Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell: Conviction. Microsoft has stated that they have partnered with Flash memory device manufacturer SanDisk to release officially branded USB Flash Drives for the Xbox 360, though there has been no confirmation of a European roll-out at this point. The Xbox LIVE update is available to download now across Europe and most other major territories, and Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest firmware updates for the Xbox 360 console.
