^^ Pulled this off the Amazon product page

  • Stream online video, music and more to your TV using your smartphone, tablet, or laptop
  • Supports Netflix, YouTube, Hulu Plus, and Google Play Movies and Music mobile apps as well as select content through Chrome browser
  • Works with Android, iOS, Chrome for Mac, and Chrome for Windows
  • Easy setup: Plug into any HDTV and connect to your home WiFi network

It lets you stream your tab from Chrome, and streams videos from your Android device. Good enough for me for a $35 device that just sits behind my TV

It is worth it indeed. For starters, you don't need to keep a >100W device running for what can be achieve with a watt or two. It also has much better compatibility and reach for content. Control is also easier with your phone.

Koush isn't happy with the literally anti-"local streaming" stance taken by Google in the guise of updates.

That alone is making me not buy one right now, maybe later when it is useful for streaming locally.

^^ That's probably because Google wants to get content providers (like cable companies) to support streaming to Chromecast, and maybe position it like the Apple TV. If they allowed support for local files, it would only make it harder for them to negotiate.

Just somebody else's thoughts that I'm using like my own :fear:

So basically we can watch youtube and other videos and stuff through it on our tv?

Pretty sure that'd come soon. I already have an awesome DIY setup to stream anything from anywhere to anywhere at home and control from either TV universal remote or phone but still bought this (didnt receive yet) because of the possibilities (In fact, I can also use chromecast like functionality itself with a cheapcast app (not working right now for some reason)). For $35, it's a no brainer, especially when compared to PS3. With PS3, it will take you that much time to boot it up and start the video in which you'd already watching finished a small song with chromecast. Also the ease of use of searching, controlling would be pretty damn high.

:giggle:yeah... I'm gonna try it this weekend, since ARHD has been giving me trouble. Thanks

edit: Looks like the Viper ROM is still based on 4.2.2 and not 4.3? :threatenlumber:

But yeah, I'll try it out anyway. :)

edit2: I just checked out a video about the Viper ROM, and it looks great! It has a ton of options and looks quick. Looks like I'll have to try it for sure. :good:

Check out InsertCoin, it's on 4.3, and I'm running it. Quite a good ROM, lots of customization options as well. I haven't run into any trouble with it either.

The Apple TV can stream files from your local network/computer, it can also mirror your Mac/iPhone/iPad displays. It does a LOT more.

I have both the Apple TV and the Chromecast, and I mainly use the latter for Netflix and YouTube. The Apple TV gets a lot more use, simply cause it's better and easier to use.

That said, the Chromecast is an awesome device to watch YouTube on the TV. Don't think there is any other usage scenario for it in India.

True, I was talking about directly out of the box. :P

For me, it'd be out of the box wonly :P because I have a script on the router itself that applies unblock-us (and a few other fallback DNS options) specifically for netflix/hulu/iplayer and a few other protected things while keeping my regular dns options for all other services.

:O tell me how to do that, please.

you need to load up an alternative fw, e.g., dd-wrt, then write a script that executes at bootup and appends the following to your router's dnsmasq.conf

server=/netflix.com/208.122.23.22

server=/netflix.com/208.122.23.23

Replace netflix.com with whatever service you want to reach, replace the ip address with the ip address of the dns server of the unblocking service you use (e.g. unblock-us, tunlr, etc)

Edit: dd-wrt may also have an option to execute some commands at boot up i think in it's config webpage. In that case, you can just use echo command with the above text to append it to the dnsmasq.conf
