Superfrag, you had posted a nice post with a lot of links to xda developers to get a new SGS buyer to start rooting etc. Can you repost it, and maybe a mod could edit it into the OP?

Here. MT posted a link to the Dev Section too, that will have all the root instructions and custom ROM instructions.

Gah, this Samsung Kies is one POS software :wallbash: How do I update my damn firmware to atleast official ones? I'm unable to find the firmwares online either. SGS guys, please advise. Or any other method to get the latest official Indian/Asian SGS build.

Bump.

Also, any way to sync my osx address book contacts to my phone? I dont want to use google sync because my google contacts is cluttered with old gtalk only friends. Or can I create a new group?

Where are all the droids??..

Btw, sorted the contacts thing out. I was totally WTF when I saw random email IDs pop up in my contacts list. I mean I just mailed these people once 2-3 years back. I disabled contacts sync. Also, no direct way to mass delete contacts?!?..Had to go to application settings.

I'm not able to find the official firmwares and Samsung Kies is failing me again n again :(..

Good soul Ryan has released his lagfix on the market. Boy, the phone has really become a lot snappier even on my stock firmware. Got a Quadrant score of 2247.

Btw, MT have you tested out the latest froyo build? I am thinking of jumping to XWJM6, but I'm confused as to go with the european or Asian version. Any baseband variances? Or I can safely go with either?

Start Google maps or whatever and point it to the sky outside. Don't do this if it's raining though :fear:

Well yeaa tried that.. Waited for bout 5mins, it was still searching. :nerves:

Also how do you set it so that it uses the mobile internet and not wifi? I have the Vodafone settings and stuff setup but I think the browser and the rest of the apps are trying to connect via wifi.

Forgive my noobiness :fear:

Would this be related to your issue in any way? --> http://mobilenews.mybloogs.com/2010/08/17/samsung-galaxy-s-gps-gate-two-problems-not-one-and-what-to-do-about-it/

Or maybe this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJmLLIfcWCY

Or this?

From http://www.samsunggalaxysforum.com/samsung-galaxy-s-how-to/gps-working-perfectly!!/msg2221/?PHPSESSID=a966f3f1f03acd30f90ef58e56f620b1#msg2221

Sorry it took so long to get back to you. Most of the sites that had the fix have been shut down. I have the steps, just follow it and it should work perfectly like mine does. If you want more info before trying it, just google search Samsung galaxy s gps fix. There should be quite a few sites that talk about it. It will take some searching but you should be able to find more detailed directions.

I found that this fix from xda-developers worked dramatically well on my Galaxy S. Seems it is simply a settings issue as www.spirent-lcs.com doesn't exist:

* Step 1 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Uncheck the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"

* Step 2 -- Open the dialer (the phone button) and enter the following: *#*#1472365#*#* . Then press "send" to open the Vibrant's LbsTestMode menu.

* Step 3 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, press “Application Settings” and change “Operation Mode” to “MS Based.”

* Step 4 -- In the LBSTestMode menu, find “SUPL/CP Settings” and change the SERVER & PORT to supl.google.com and port 7276 (DO NOT use www. in front of supl !)

* Step 5 -- Reboot your phone.

* Step 6 -- Open menu > settings > Location & Security. Check the box next to "Use Wireless Networks"

If you want to reverse these changes, the original specs are:

Operation Mode: Standalone

SERVER: www.spirent-lcs.com

PORT: 7275

One of the comments on that vid:

All this app does is run in the background talking to the GPS satellites. When you switch to Google Maps, your device already has a satellite fix so Google Maps will jump to your position quickly. Dial *#*#1472365#*#* and choose "Get position Test" then press the back button. Note the GPS icon up at the top stays there. Now go back to Get position test, press back to the main menu LbsTestMode, the GPS icon at the top is gone.

Official Froyo should be out in a matter of weeks. In the meantime, update your phone to the latest internal 2.1 build called JP8 [Africa build]. Its the best 2.1 FW for the SGS.

^U mean JG8 right?

Btw, I think my phone's faulty. Whenever i put my creative EP630 earphones to listen to music, the sound is so distorted. its like the setting concert/dome is on while it isnt. It outputs the sound normally through my car speakers though. Is there any fix or is it a a specific fault in my phone?

edit: thanks to rithvik, i find it its a common problem. But no one on IVG has this issue?
