@snake: You need root if you want to do anything out of the below:

- Uninstall default apps

- Apply custom ROMs or any special kernels or apply any fixes that require root

- Use the phone like a linux machine

- And since you are on 2.1, if you want to have usb/wi-fi tethering

Yes you are wrong. There are other methods of safe sex too you condom cocker :ack::chair:

Was jk !!..

But yes, there def are more ways for safe sex.. Dunno about rooting though ! :P

No there ain't.. not unless you want to catch something really scary :samui:

I have done much research into this (Theory of course, not practicals as far as hookers go ;) ) and come out with the universally known conclusion "Don't be silly, protect your willy" :P

Now this would be a very good reason. Don't know about the Wildfire, but atleast with the SGS and other Android phones, there seem to be new ROMs flying forth every few weeks. If I were you, I'd root just to try each one out.

Male condoms

Female Condoms

Diaphragms

Vaginal Sponges

All are barriers against STDs :P

Enough OT now !!

^^ oh yeah forgot.. rooting is needed also for extreme customization and theming..

@gaurav: It depends on the custom rom scene for any given device and what you are seeking to get from them..The custom rom scene is the best for N1 out there and as weird it may sound, I still haven't rooted. That is the best part of Android that you do not absolutely "need" rooting (except maybe onold devices where you are not getting updates or galaxy devices or where there are some issues that need rooting to be solved)..

^^ Snake: Rooting process is different for every phone. You gotta look at your phone model's specific forum over at xda-developers.com

Edit: Some links for you:

No way! :eyepop: You, of all people!

:P what can I say.. I get everything I need from the phone without rooting..not much into theming and stuff (even if I do want it I can just do that by installing a new launcher)..plus all the great features are already in stock ROM plus battery life and performance balance is best with N1 stock ROM. This coupled with the fact that WP7 made my life hell and didn't leave me any time, I couldn't afford to tinker much with custom ROMs.

Shantz Bro i need to root My HTC Legend... to get the Wifi Tethering thing and i use Mac

Can you help me?

Same as snake, look for the HTC Legend sub section at xda-developers. They will have a sticky for it definitely either in the General Q&A or development sub-sub forum of your phone model.

The SGS has package deals. Root+lagfix in one update.zip package :P. Like he said, root is required to backup some protected apps, delete bloatware etc.

@Snake. its pretty easy to root. Though be careful with custom roms. Actually with a little care, absolutely nothing can go wrong. You can try launcherpro for custom icons, and some cool widgets. Though HTC's Sense has a decent set of widgets too.
