Check this. Not sure about android, but they have excellent offline maps for India. Like Mapmyindia. And reviews are quite good for this on the iOS store atleast. (700mb app)

Oh Sygic Aura? Yeah I found that last night but do they have maps for India? They keep saying so much about Euro maps that I keep thinking "maybe it's a european-only app"

EDIT: Checked, it says MapMyIndia 90% coverage like you mentioned.

Would the procedure detailed here - http://theunlockr.com/2010/12/17/how-to-root-the-samsung-nexus-s/ - be the proper one to follow for unlocking and rooting the Nexus S ?? And is it safe to do it first thing after charging the phone for the first time?? (so that I don't lose any updates or setting changes that I do after that)

I've used that on someone else's phone. He'd bought it looking at the 4 star rating too. Doesn't work. And the interface is horrible. Like really bad.

There is no god! ><

There is :chair: Go see how much I wrote for that one entry. I've been doing similar long entries for different stuff all over the place.

Remember :

The man who plants and the man who waters have one purpose, and each will be rewarded according to his own labor.

--1 Corinthians 3:8, NIV

So after I won it, I've been searching and searching for stuff to do with it when it arrives, and I was looking at Google Voice and free calls and such. Then I came across a few articles that said it'd be easiest if you had a Gizmo5 account from the pre-google-acquisition period. Amazingly I did have an account that could still be accessed on Gizmo5.

The irony was that I signed up to Gizmo5 because my N79 told me to somewhere along the way. Thank you Nokia :P

Yup, the procedure is very nicely explained in that page. Don't be scared by the amount of points, it's EXTREMELY easy.

Do it when you get the phone in your hand, and don't bother with that charging the phone for first time, it's only in your mind. Reason I'm saying to do it ASAP is because fastboot oem unlock erases everything, on your internal 16gb NAND as well. (Security reason).

For now, before you get your phone, atleast set up ADB. When it's successfully setup, you should get a list of all possible commands when you type "adb" in the cmd, regardless of which directory you are in.

Haha, don't worry I'm not intimidated by the procedure. I love doing this sort of thing :)

Yeah I'll do it before loading anything on the phone (still will charge first to keep my "all devices must be fully charged before usage" Dad and show him how stock android looks before i put my hands on it) and then start off with installing appinstaller after upgrading the market to the new one and then proceed with the rest of the (somewhat HUGE) list of downloads I have planned :D.

I've already downloaded the SDK for 2.3 . I'll go ahead and install and add to path and get stuff ready.

Any no-subscription solution to wipe the device clean (I usually have some app like this on any phone even if I've never lost a phone in my life) in case it falls into the wrong hands? I'll put Lookout mobile security on it but only the premium version can wipe user data remotely using an SMS if it is lost. I found something for froyo on XDA from July-August but that xda developer hasn't updated the app or finished it. I think that was a test version of Autowipe.

Also found the MyPhoneExplorer client for Android! OMG I just love MyPhoneExplorer from back in the days when I used to have a Sony Ericsson K750. One software that works perfect all the time unlike Nokia PC Suite which either works brilliantly or makes me tear my hair out.

Btw what should I use to move apps from one internal partition to the SD-card-like partition (I'm assuming the Nexus S still shows 2 memories and not just 1 16gb partition or something) to prevent the smaller portion from filling up??

And if I want to load apks is it alright if I use this --> http://www.appbrain.com/app/appinstaller(christmas)/com.IQBS.android.appInstaller after copying all the apps to the phone rather than have to stick a USB cord to it and use adb??

Also, the Nexus S does charge via the USB cable when connected to the PC right? Sorry if I sound stupid, but I'm asking cos my current phone doesn't and I've kinda gotten used to the fact.

Why?

Isn't the stock Nexus s good enough?

If I decide to root later, then I'd need to erase everything on the phone and restore.. not something I want to do.

Inevitably I'll come across something like Titanium Backup which I'll want but will need a rooted phone, besides I went to the extent of getting my own dev certificate on a Nokia using that damned OPDA symbian website in chinese and making posts there until I was able to get the privileges to get a certificate specific to my phone

With that said, no way I'll let an Android phone alone without playing with it to the max :naughty:

Like DS says, no custom roms, I'll only use launchers like ADW EX or LauncherPro and such to change the phone's looks, or put a live wallpaper on it.

The new roms for the galaxy S r damn good vis a vis Darkys rom, Webstar's rom etc. The ones which dont force wipe your apps and settings. On the fly rom installations. Even titanium backup fails at times.

For the SGS, seeing how Sammy's stock roms are full of fail, custom roms are a must, and now they're so optimised and devs have learnt a lot. The custom ones are miles better than the stock ones
