vbhoj74
Do you have airtel? I have a working Google Voice on my PC now (and hopefully with asterisk on my router and an ATA adapter to analog phone at home) but I can't get it working on my phone because it seems that Airtel is blocking all the SIP providers. The only options that I have is either to use it on WLAN (not possible in office as STUN ports are blocked), use my own asterisk installation (requires the router to be always on) or use a lesser known SIP provider Yep, I've airtel cell number and a Rs 98/- mthly gprs plan. My voip client works beautifully with my asterisk server at home over edge. Dont use ulaw/alaw, try G.729, requires much less bandwidth. Have not used voip over my airtel around a month now since lost my phone, will try it once i get the nexus in my hand. Terminating GV on asterisk is awesome, you can pick up your ATA/voip phone and make US calls for free, and you can direct incoming calls. Most of the installation is better not discussed on forums because most of the part is pretty experimental and not legal in India. Btw I found something that USES your PC for installs over the air to an Android phone though: http://www.taranfx.com/install-android-apps-from-pc-mac Arey, I lined up all those apps in appbrain thinking I would just nstall appbrain on the phone and it will sync all those apps for me automatically. If you have your own asterisk server terminating your GV trunk, use your phone as a SIP client, and you dont need that GV call back to call out. Pick up the phone, & call, thats all. Besides, I never tried the GV app, it shud let us make direct out bound calls, need to try that. Also, One can get a free SIP account here: https://mdns.sipthor.net/register_sip_account.phtml So say both you & me have a SIP account, we can just dial our SIP URI to connect, on edge./wifi thus bypassing the VSP and the toll charges. So say you are roaming abroad, and have an IP phone at home with a SIP account, you can still call back free whenever you are in a wifi internet service. Once you guys are up and running with basic GV calling, I will tell you a way to call anywhere around the globe (including India) for free. In PM only ! lol

Shantz
Just got the asterisk server up and running fine on my router. 1.8 even has GV integration inbuilt so that reduces a lot of burden. Much much faster and better than using Gizmo5 account. With gizmo, even on WLAN I was having erratic calls (though codec used there was ulaw, it wasn't allowing anything else, but still 64kbps duplex should be fine enough on a 2mbps connection). With my server, even on edge, everything is perfect and you can't even make out the difference between a normal call (though the codec it uses is GSM speex 13kbps, still to tweak around with this stuff). Main thing is that with my own server, now it is actually working on edge as otherwise airtel seems to have blocked most sip providers. The only lacunae with not using Gizmo5 account is that I am using a free US number routing which may be disabled if it is inactive for 30 days (or at any other time they feel like pruning their list). BTW, I tried out GV app as well. Didnt complete the setup but it looks like it will cause more hassles than its worth as it has various options to automatically use GV or ask everytime you make a call. I don't want that much integration with normal dialer. Edited January 3, 2011 by Shantz

What if I wanna use it without trying to fry my router but with just my phone? Can i use this guide from XDA then? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887131 Or should I do this only? http://www.xtremecoders.org/forums/f90/install-asterisk-any-pc-windows-430/ And an e-mail from Techrunch comes in They spelled my name wrong in the mail Grrrrr.... Shantz
But what if we don't have a router that can run asterisk or any such software? What if I wanna use it without trying to fry my router but with just my phone? Can i use this guide from XDA then? - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=887131 And mail from Techrunch comes in Yes you can. Your options are: 1. Run asterisk on your PC instead of router 2. Use Gizmo (or any other sip provider + a free US PSTN to SIP router) instead of running your own server Option 2 is easiest but: 1. you won't be able to use it on EDGE as most of them are blocked 2. you are also locked into the codecs allowed by the SIP provider which may or may not be good enough for quality calls 3. The ports used might be blocked on your wifi network (if you are not at home). WIth your own server you can use some other ports. BTW, that guide doesn't tell you but you need to verify your GV account for the first time through a normal US phone number and that cant be done through gizmo (u can use a US phone number or sip + pstn to sip router). But after that, with gizmo, you dont need to worry about this number as you can directly add gizmo acct to GV and route calls to it. There are ways, btw, to do the call-out directly from phone instead of through GV even with 2nd option. Some that I know of are: 1. Use GV app 2. Use some other GV callback apps on market 3. Use a PBXes.org account that does the same setup that we are doing with asterisk but you need to give them your GV username/password so that they can log you into the gtalk jabber server and initiate calls from there. (PBXes setup is natively supported by SIPdroid and it takes only the push of a button to set up most things including registering at pbxes. But I havent tried this as I was wary of giving anyone my user id/pwd even though I have created a new gmail acct just for this) Edit: BTW, one word of advise. Running the asterisk server isn't for the faint of heart, especially if you are new to all the telephony terminology. Even with the 1.8 version, there is lots to configure and lots of places you can go wrong, not to mention what to load, what not to load, extra packages needed to be installed (though this might be better on a full linux distro as dependencies might be taken care of by their package manager), etc.. Death Stryke
Where are all the SGS owners these days? No one's flashing new roms? (MT, Jiggy?) So anyway, i installed Darkky's v8.0 BLN and circle battery mod is built in finally. He corrected a lot of bugs apparently after facing a lot of flak for his earlier releases. Glad non-wipe roms are releasing these days, no more hassle of resyncing and titanium etc.

Shantz bhai, that deepends if yo are building from scratch. I recomment using the build 1.8.1 from here: http://pbxinaflash.com/downloads/ and follow these guides: http://nerdvittles.com/ With the above build, everything is integrated for you out of the box, be it gizmo or GV, you only need to enter your credentials. You would be up and running with a basic setup with no time, but when I say "basic" it only means in the voip world, for the PSTN its still a much advanced setup. On the 1st link's forum and on the 2nd link there are tons of information and scrips for months of reading and tweaking. you will be amazed to see that sky is the limit when you load it on a PC. You can then still make & receive calls even if you are not under any internet coverage and with a 1500 bucks cell phone, that too anywhere on the globe. Have unified voice mail boxes where you would receive voicemails by emails. If you are serious in experimenting, get yourself a TDM400 card with 2FXO and 2FXS ports and you would be rolling. Whole different topic & possibilities than just making & receiving free call from the US. EDIT: once you have the GV up, try http://www.freephone2phone.com/ for free calls to the world. EDIT: Santz, also try codec g.722 HD voice/wideband, you see so much difference between PSTN & voip that you would not wanna go back to PSTN ever. Thanks..I had read about pbx in a flash but couldnt use it since I wanted it on my router for easy use and always on capability (I plan to add an ATA and an analog phone to it and also keep it on while I'm out of home)..For the g722 codec, I read that it wont matter if using an analog phone and for android, sipdroid is not supporting it
Death Stryke
@megzworld Haha. I think Jiggy still has it. MT no idea, he used to flash a lot before. even Noctis and Rithvik have it. Dont think they flash anymore tho. Samsung has finally ironed out most of the bugs in the SGS firmware. The firmware and kernel is getting better and better. Its awesome to participate in online podcasts/conferences using HD voice. I had couple of paid voip clients on the iphone supporting g.722 and g.729, need to check that on android soon. I'm sure one of them will have an android version soon.
