Death Stryke
@Gaurav True. Although even WinMo people used to flash I used to hate flashing before because the process was very cumbersome. Too many steps were involved. Now its very easy to do it on the fly. And you get a lot of choice of kernels and inbuilt apps and themes etc. Underlying base firmware is same across all the roms though.

Shantz
How far we've come in the years gone by... If you'd said you enjoy flashing every day 5-10 years ago you'd have got in trouble But now everyone does it. @Gaurav True. Yeah, I started doing all the "flashing" like 6-7 years ago and did till 2-3 years ago (The XDA site was infact built around win mo phones, particularly around HTC phones which were sold under XDA brand name by O2 in Europe. My tryst with XDA began with the QTEK9100 aka XDA mini s aka HTC wizard)..But after getting nexus one, quite curiously, I haven't flashed it even once with a custom build, wasn't even tempted to do so..have just installed the regular stock OTA updates..(Also, amazingly yet again, I am not even rooted) @shantz: g.722 on android: http://www.sipez.com/ezAndroid.html Danke I'll try this one out as another drawback with sipdroid is that it is horribly slow. It is such a pain even to change one setting in sipdroid without getting an ANR Edited January 4, 2011 by Shantz

I was trying hard to find one Try BRIA if you are not looking for wideband at the moment, I'm sure they will add that pretty soon. They make good clients for the Mac. Aren't there plenty of apps that work only if you have root??? atleast I think there are in my mega-list.

I tried to google "android top apps rooted", i got few sites, but most of them were like to tweak the CPU etc which I would probably never need. Yet trying hard to find a feature that I need and is not covered in the stock version with add on apps.
Shantz
Aren't there plenty of apps that work only if you have root??? atleast I think there are in my mega-list. On a "pure" android phone, the uses of rooting are quite limited. I don't like (and have time) to mod the visual appearance of the phone. The other things like wifi tether/flashlight were enabled by Froyo. I dont even take screenshots of phone generally and if need be, then I anyways have SDK installed on my system to take it through DDMS. I dont really feel perturbed by ads etc so dont need adblocker stuff. I am also quite diligent in installing only trusted apps and spotting quirky behaviour by apps, so dont need firewall to protect myself. For phone security solutions, wavesecure installs as administator and has all the desired capabilities without rooting. Also, I was satisfied with the phone performance and battery life so no need of underclocking/undervolting/overclocking. Lastly, for backup: - Android already backs up apps/settings/contacts - mail is anyways on server - I dont get a lot of important texts (but anyways they can be backed up in cloud without rooting) - rest stuff is on SD card (and a lot of it is backed up regularly (e.g. pics/vids etc) to cloud/pc without need of rooting ) & I am not flashing anyways, so no need for a solution like titanium. I'd be very much into changing the look of the OS and the occasional CPU tweaking, so I guess it might be useful to root.

There were few things that I wanted iOS to take care without jailbreak, like blocking telecommuter calls etc, which android takes care unrooted. Death Stryke
@shantanu if you dont do all those, then yes you wouldn't need rooting surely. Btw, when you say, apps, settings get backed up to Google. how do i restore em whenever i reflash a custom rom?? Only the names of the apps get backed up right? Not the data in the apps themselves, for which you would need Titanium? Yeah, mainly rooting is must if u use Setcpu and put mods on lockscreens, battery icons etc. But then, I dont see what possible harm could rooting do. Superuser anyway tracks if any app asks for su request Edited January 4, 2011 by Death Stryke

Superuser anyway tracks if any app asks for su request I havent had the need to restore them so far but They should automatically restore. For settings, google allows apps to backup the settings but this is not mandatory/automatic. So, if an app didn't back up the settings they wont be restored. And I don't really care about the "data" in the apps. None of the apps that I use have data that cannot be regained from cloud. In my case, titanium would offer nothing more than saving of time while restoring which I anyways don't need since I don't flash custom ROMs. BTW, lockscreen mods dont require root (at least most of them work on mine without rooting).. And yes, there are no harms as such to rooting (besides a minor chance of bricking and another cat and mouse that you need to play after every stock update ). I just didn't feel the need to do so as there was nothing compelling on offer for me to invest time in it. So, as it stands, I am unrooted right now and will do it some time down the line when a really compelling root only app comes out, or when google stops updates for my phone (or delays them a lot like they are showing the signs for now). My advice for people short on time: Buy a pure android phone and live worry free for an year or so. Then either root or sell it and buy another pure android phone. Jigsaw
Where are all the SGS owners these days? No one's flashing new roms? (MT, Jiggy?) So anyway, i installed Darkky's v8.0 BLN and circle battery mod is built in finally. He corrected a lot of bugs apparently after facing a lot of flak for his earlier releases. Glad non-wipe roms are releasing these days, no more hassle of resyncing and titanium etc. am on the official indian froyo JP6 rooted as always and with Voodoo LagFix... haven't bothered flashing to anything else. I've resigned to the fact that there will be no end to the vicious cycle of running after the latest n greatest in the vain hope of attaining brilliant battery life. I anyways have a spare battery so i just use the phone like there's no tomorrow and charge it when required.
Death Stryke
JP6?!?!?. thats like stone ages in terms of SGS firmware releases ..JPA..JPO, JPU, JPX came after that and went also...and JPY is now the final 2.2.1 firmware which is very very fast and optimized. And its not only about battery life bro, some key tweaks in firmware also help in GPS locking, Wifi, mobile phone signal etc. try it out sometime. No more Odin related bullshit. Simply process through clockworkmod @Shantz and Gaurav Yeah Pure Android phones First class passegers I guess you guys have no issues, but the rest of us at the mercy of the manufacturers have a lot to worry about . But damn its fun now, i actually worry about linpack and quadrant scores now Edited January 4, 2011 by Death Stryke

Gotta head over to xda forums to catch up with the current stuff is there a 2.2.1 no-wipe rom?

Aren't they as good as being on stock (and stable too)? Btw anyone here with a Nexus S has tried overclocking to 1.2 or 1.3 or even 1.4 Ghz?? Here's looking at you Superfrag. Seems like some people are stable at 1.3 and it gives a noticeable increase in actual phone speed.
Death Stryke
^Well, the stock froyo 2.2.1 roms released in December really sorted out a lot of issues. I guess Samsung learnt a lot about Android coding while working with Google on the Nexus S So we SGS owners got the benefit of that.

Actually, pure android phones also get the best and most stable custom ROMs because they have almost all of their source code integrated in the main Android tree (AOSP) by google.
