Does it void warranty?

Legally yes. But like Shantz said, just unroot and restore your phone to a stock condition if you want to take it for servicing. Before you first change to any new ROM, take a nandroid backup (via recovery) of your stock rom.

HTC desire HD amazing phone :) bit higher than ur range but u won't regret if u consider.

Very good phone, except be warned that the phone's a vampire as far as battery's concerned.

so wats the deal with 2.1 and 2.2 ? why cant a phone runnin 2.1 be upgraded to 2.2 ??

Depends on what phone you're on. A stock android phone can be updated to 2.2 but the only stock android phones are Google's own Nexus line of phones. With other manufacturers, they always have some custom tweak like Touchwiz or some other UI running over stock android. So they take their time to modify any latest release to suit their own needs before releasing a new update. Of course, there are other factors if you're on a carrier locked device (refer: the recent controversy over Samsung demanding that carriers pay a hefty sum for updating the various SGS variants to 2.2). So it basically boils down to your manufacturer and your carrier having to release an update.

However, if you're game for it, you can use any new ROM that's available (IF there is indeed a 2.2 rom for your device) for your specific model to upgrade to 2.2. But do be careful and read up before you try your hand at it.

Has anyone here with a Nexus S had 2.3.3 pushed to their phone?

If yes, do try this app - https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nxp.nfc.tagwriter&feature=search_result - which needs Gingerbread 2.3.3. I'm too lazy to go back to stock and try checking-in to see if an update pops up. I'm on modaco r11 which is pretty stable for now. And Paul's on holiday for the next 2 weeks, so I imagine there won't be an r12 with 2.3.3 on it anytime soon.

That app is an NFC tag writer. I'm thinking about giving my college authorities a little 'gift' via some special 'comments' written on my college ID's nfc tag when I hand it in and leave in 2 months. :naughty: But it won't install on 2.3.2 :(

Some other NFC apps I found:

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.taglet.client.android&feature=search_result

https://market.android.com/details?id=se.anyro.nfc_reader&feature=search_result

https://market.android.com/details?id=be.emich.nfc.fourtags&feature=search_result

https://market.android.com/details?id=com.touchatag.android&feature=search_result

So android gurus,

You install custom roms, launchers to get rid of the layering of the manufacturers?

Like removing TouchWiz and HTC's Sense for example?

Does it void warranty?

Few reasons : Custom ROM's usually have some tweaks over stock, like MoDaCo's.

Or they don't include manufacturer UI's and are based on stock Google UI.

Or like, CyanogenMod & MIUI, they're highly modified AOSP builds.

guys can u suggest which would be the best android based phone considering my budget would be 20 to 25k max...

Desire HD/Nexus S/Desire Z, depending on your preferences(screen size, keyboard, etc.)

I'm actually waiting for the Koush to merge in 2.3.3 with CM7, release it soon. Maybe RC2.

That'll be my next change. Obviously, will update to r12/r13, since I don't loose any data then.

Another reason to switch to CM7 is to keep Facebook Sync with contacts. Apparently Google wants Facebook to use the Contacts API, and has disabled Facebook sync with contacts in 2.3.3 for Nexus S. Not for Nexus One though. :/

Maybe Paul can keep that particular feature from 2.3.2..

GINGERBREAD 2.3.3 Update for both the Nexus One and Nexus S.

http://androinica.com/2011/02/24/google-releases-manual-2-3-3-updates-for-nexus-one-and-nexus-s/

That page has links to the respective update.zip files too for you to manually flash without checking-in and waiting everyday. :wOOtjumpy:

So, the Xoom reviews are out. Personally the UI looks kinda messy to me. Better than earlier versions of android and more cohesive but still trying too much. Touch response still hasn't been nailed.

Better battery than I expected though. Gruber asks a very valid question. Why would a civilian buy this right now instead of the iPad? The iPad 1.

Yeah. Inspite of the wow hardware, reviewers state choppiness while scrolling and a lot of bugs (which should get ironed out though). The choppiness and inconsistent UI alone is a bummer for me and my biggest gripe with android. Plus display is lacklustre. Battery is quite good though. Comparable to ipads benchmark figures. As usual, ticking off a checklist donot make for a better experience

I think everyone will be waiting for Mar 2 though. Apple had to rain on Motos parade :P
