Ne0
haha, lol, whats the point of android being open source, if you can't root and flash the mobile on which it runs ? Google should not allow operators to do this. Its like shooting themselves in the foot.

achilles
Hmm..MS is getting served. Android ate their (whatever small) evening snack that was WinMo and Chrome box or book, if (which I feel they will) they become popular in the enterprise, will wallop their dinner. Fun times ahead. Exchange for Android 2.x is the name on the Market. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.nitrodesk.droid20.nitroid I'm no expert on mail apps though. For the browser, get Dolphin HD or Opera Mobile (not Mini) v11. Get App2SD to be able to move certain apps to the SD card. https://market.android.com/details?id=com.a0soft.gphone.app2sd Hope this helps. Solitaire
By the way if anyone here is using Backlight Notifications (BLN), how's your battery consumption? I'd said my battery drain was quite high earlier this week and I disabled BLN control (the app itself, not just blinking) and battery life seems to have improved a LOT. Blinking seems to require a wakelock, but even leaving the backlight LEDs at a steady ON seems to make the "Android OS" process run overtime and suck battery like a hungry vampire since it seems to be polling every 5 seconds or so. Superfrag
@ Gaurav : Haven't used BLN yet, I don't feel the need to use any notification app as such. @glen : Music is still in beta and invite only. Obviously it's not ready for prime time. Oh, and about the matter of HTC signing or locking the bootloaders, it has nothing to do with Google. Google doesn't really care whether HTC signs their boot and recovery partitions or not. HTC doesn't care about the minuscule amount of people who won't buy it due to the protection. I think it has everything to do with Netflix DRM. The recently updated Market allows developers to restrict their apps to particular devices or exclude apps from certain devices. At the same time this feature was released, Netflix also released with support for HTC devices, some old ones and I'm pretty sure all the new ones as well. Pretty sure it's not a coincidence. Only one exception ; Nexus S. HTC will gain a lot more customers if they're the only Android OEM that can play Netflix. That's why at the same time Netflix/Qualcomm announced that it would be releasing the Android version of Netflix for future Qualcomm devices, HTC started signing and protecting their bootloader and recovery partitions. So maybe the protected recovery and boot partitions is what HTC had to do to get Netflix run on Android? Or for HTC to be the sole OEM with support for Netflix? I could be wrong, but I'm pretty confident I'm not.. Edited May 14, 2011 by Superfrag
achilles
Why would Netflix bother with a locked or unlocked bootloader? Their service is streaming. Doesn't make sense to me.
spindoctor
So maybe the protected recovery and boot partitions is what HTC had to do to get Netflix run on Android? Solitaire
@ Gaurav : Haven't used BLN yet, I don't feel the need to use any notification app as such. Yeah I don't need anything more than a beep to notify me, but you know me.. always trying out some new app or other. Found now that I can take it to one and a half days with very conservative usage if I don't use BLN at all. Also by some strange occurence, when I cleared Dalvik Cache today and rebooted, it first showed up with the old Nexus S Screen colors before changing to the Voodoo set-up. When you see the abrupt change it's just amazing what an awesome difference Voodoo makes. HTC doesn't care about the minuscule amount of people who won't buy it due to the protection. In the Android world, protection is NOT essential But yeah, apart from the XDA-frequenters like us who's gonna care Only one exception ; Nexus S. Muhahahahahahaha

Oh, and about the matter of HTC signing or locking the bootloaders, it has nothing to do with Google. Google doesn't really care whether HTC signs their boot and recovery partitions or not. Correct. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty confident I'm not.. Why would Netflix bother with a locked or unlocked bootloader? Their service is streaming. Doesn't make sense to me. Netflix probably doesn't care directly but HTC is probably doing it to protect the reverse-engineering of the DRM that has been implemented specifically for Netflix. Superfrag
so why do they need to lock the bootloaders of the handsets sold outside america? netflix doesn't work anywhere else, so lock the american specific branded handsets and leave the others alone. Why bother with regional issues or policies? It makes their job easier if they decide to lock and encrypt all the SKU's, rather than deciding where to take these measures or not. In the Android world, protection is NOT essential They need to protect their Intellectual Property inside the OS build. That's why HTC is taking these measures ; to protect the Netflix DRM. Why would Netflix bother with a locked or unlocked bootloader? Their service is streaming. Doesn't make sense to me. Again, DRM. Qualcomm has mentioned earlier that the future devices will be carrying Netflix's DRM content, or something of the sort. Remember, I'm just making these speculations. www.twitter.com/russellholly raised this point first, most of my points are echoes of his. He made some really good arguments, however.
