Oh, and I forgot one more thing. There is this comfy little vibration which comes on each time I select something. Couldn't turn it off (at least, not yet).

I think that's haptic feedback.. it should be there in the settings.

Hey guys,

I just got a Defy. I need a few clarifications. The manual says to charge the phone for 3 hours. The first time I charged it, it completed within an hour. So, I started using it. I did not make any calls all day, but was using internet profusely (GPRS). Backup went bong within 24 hours. Is it because of the first charge, or does internet drain so much or is the Defy like this?

This is the first time I'm using android, so don't know sh*t about it.

Also, now I re-charged it for the second time. Re-charging completed within 2 hours, even though the manual said 3 hours.....am I missing something?

And also, any tips for making the charge last longer?

I was using the battery monitor to track the usage. No demanding app was running in the background, considering it's just a day old. The usual skype, Gtalk, etc. were running though.

like fatty said, it'll take a few days for the battery to calibrate. internet, gps, syncing, wifi drain your battery faster than anything, so keep them off by default and enable them when you need it. that will help with battery life too, but the bottom line is, modern smartphones are not like your old trusty nokia 1100 that will last 8 days on standby :P. depending on your use, you'll have to get used to charging your phone every day or two.

speaking of battery life, has anyone ever used juice defender? does it actually make a difference or is it more of a placebo type thing? and if so, why is it one of the highest selling apps on the market?

A few general tips

Turn off Wifi/GPS/Bluetooth when not in use

Turn off Background Data Sync

Don't use Auto Brightness.Use a dark/black theme with minimum brightness

Turn down the browser brightness

Let the battery die down completely and then fully charge iit without turning on the phone to complete the battery cycle

Ok so galaxy s2 it is then. I wont worry about the size of the thing cuz she's grown used to big handhelds*.

Big enough to bash one's head in with.. 4 inch plus is just TOO DAMN BIG! Like that dell streak monstrosity. Hasn't Samsung heard that size doesn't matter and that it's how you use it

To each his own? :P

I wasn't talking about the S2 here though. Sure it's a bit big for my taste but I might still use one of those despite 0.3 inches or whatever extra cos it's close to 4. 5 inches is pushing it too much though. And I really need a phone that I can *comfortably* push into and pull out of my trouser pockets and shirt pocket.

Thanks for the input guys, appreciated :) I have two things that aren't sorted out though. I turned of haptic feedback, but it still works. I turned off GPRS, yet it still works. WTFISDISSHIT?

EDIT: Found out the answer to one of them......FML :/

Do I have to do this only once or do I have to do it every time?

Can the Motorola Defy be upgraded to Android 2.2/2.3 ??

Every time I try to upgrade, it says N/A, Please try again later.

Defy is supposed to be on 2.2.1. Mine is on 2.1 though/

yes, it can be upgraded but I couldn't find it from Motorola india's website. xda-devs has the official Indian release file though. You can also take it to any moto service center and they will upgrade it as well..

Great phone. A friend of mine has it and swears by it.

Don't expect great battery life from Android handsets, however. Reducing screen brightness helps. And you may want to turn off data access, but then that would defeat the whole purpose of having an always-on device :|
