Bird Bird Bird
Next phone is definitely a Sony. Just had a look yesterday at the XDA OEM of the year (went to Sony) and the absolutely amazing support Sony and the devs give each other for modding their phones. With Xperia Z launching with head to head innards compared to the likes of Samsung and HTC, there is no doubt it will enjoy better community support over Samsung (with many of the devs already eyeing the Z). piper
True that, Sony ensures their efforts can be utilised by the dev community, example : http://www.xda-developers.com/android/an-official-alpha-release-with-kernel-source-who-does-this-sort-of-thing/

Solitaire
Nope not interested. That is sad :| He's never going with a Nexus 4 because it's not a "kewl" brand like HTC or Apple :P/>. As for screen sizes, expect 1080p/5-inches to be standard by the end of the year. As far as I'm concerned the phone's from Google regardless of which manufacturer makes it. And even then, it's a very well made phone. I wouldn't be caught dead with the iPhone though As for the screen sizes, that is also sad. 5 inch phones.. will have to get a separate pocket stitched for that. Plus I need my stock Android straight from the source without a need to flash it myself.

Bird Bird Bird
If rumors are to be believed, SIV will kick all sorts of asses with flexible display. So hold your horses. Don't jump to Sony yet. I think it's hard to materialize these kinda rumors this year. Plus I really fail to see the usefulness of a flexible display on a smartphone. It will still look like a S3, maybe with the screen rounding off from the sides for stuff like ticker etc. IMO, it is more useful (and valuable in the long term) to support OEMs like Sony who are working hard with the modding community to make sure ROMs and mods work well with their phones. Also publicly releasing their alpha/beta builds for devs to learn and use. Heck, the Sony blog has a link for all the sources and a guide required to build a kernel for it's phones. The only flaw with Sony was their usage of less-than-industry-standard innards compared to Samsung and HTC, but this year it all seems to change. And I think rightly so. Good looks + minimally themed UI + excellent modding support = Next phone purchase. Edit: Add to the above a 5 inch screen. Should be mandatory for all phones. AtheK
Likewise for someone who goes solely by brand and supposed 'kewl'ness :P/> Yup, i like my phone to have all the fancy animations, stock does not cut it for me. I can never have the CM10 rom on my phone for more then two days. I am very fond of sense and download all sense based Roms with lot of visual customisations thrown in. You can def achieve it in stock too, but then what is the point of stock. The only upside for me for a nexus phone is the timely updates, but usually all the imp things get ported within a week, and i can happily live with it. Alekh: Well said, Sony is trying to change the game ad it only bods well for the Android community, though it would have been good if it came with 4.2 out of the box, though i heard Update is not far off. The only upside for me for a nexus phone is the timely updates, but usually all the imp things get ported within a week, and i can happily live with it. I don't know.. to each his own I guess. Frankly, beyond a point I don't find a use for the supposed extra horsepower that a Nexus 4 has over a G-Nex. I like to keep the look of the phone simple and running smooth without having to change ROMs. With stock updates before any other device straight from Google, I don't need to flash it myself or wait for a ROM to show up (even if it's a short wait). And like you said, if I really wanted I could do it on a stock phone. With all that I don't see the downside to the Nexus 4, especially because the hardware is well-built... the rubberized sides, the chrome, the sexy screen, the good-looking glass back and it feels solid (despite the fact that the glass means that the phone needs to be taken extra care of). I have no particular loyalty to any manufacturer so I'd switch in a jiffy if the next Nexus was made by HTC or anyone else. That said, I won't switch to a new Nexus (atleast I'll try my best to resist since I have more than enough horsepower on this phone) if one comes out within less than a year of the N4 and if it's greater than 4.8 inches in size (which it probably will be). Sometimes I wish phone sizes had stopped around 4.5-4.7. But again, to each his own.
Bird Bird Bird
Anyone else find it funny that a man of science and medicine has compensation issues? People need to understand that Nexus is NOT the end point of all things Android. Yes, it is produced by Google, and that's why the crazy popularity. OTOH, if I buy any other OEM phone, not only can I choose from a large variety of options (screen size/processor/RAM/MMC support yada yada), but in cases like HTC, you get a beautifully skinned UI as well, which, many people might prefer over the stock Android. For those liking minimalism, you have Motorola or even Sony (web is ripe with rumors that the next Timescape version is gonna be minimally skinned). Again, almost all the major phones have the option of flashing AOSP/CM ROMs which mimic the stock Android, so I don't think one's losing anything by buying Samsung or HTC or Sony. And please don't start with "OMG Flashing is for nerds. It will BRIXXORZ my fone. I R teh NOOBZ". If you have an IQ over 90 and can read English, you can flash a phone. People with IQ under 90 shouldn't even be using Android, buy an iPhone instead. You've to understand that the custom UIs were made out of necessity, rather than choice. The earlier vanilla versions of Android were simply fugly to look at, and nobody would buy them looking at the stock UI. Hence the manufacturers started skinning, which in turn led to huge Android sales, which in turn led to further Android development, which has now led to the better-looking 4.2.1. Simply saying "Nexus WTFBBQLOOKATTHOSETITTIES" make you look retarded. Edit: Some valid points there GS. AtheK
You get in Nexus what i have had in One X for close to a year, so again it is not actually an upgrade for me. Atleast here in Korea, if I flash my phone with a custom ROM, I cannot use the operator's data network. In these situations, a phone like nexus is a much better choice.
