Yes you need to be rooted, and there is no such thing as unrooted, your flash counter has already changed and officially your phone is out of warranty now.

Read what you are doing, always

Exactly. Going back to Stock wont bring back your warranty just in case that's what you mean..

depends, in HTC if you root you have to unlock the bootloader, and if you want to unroot you have to lock the bootloader, but in this case it says Bootloader relocked and not unlocked. Warranty can be denied in such case, and nothing you can do.

In Samsung there is a flash counter, which trips every time you flash, most recoveries freeze that counter but too late, you can see it in the download menu, mine is stuck at 2

There are ways to reset your flash counter. Yours is s3. Check xda for the right way. I remember there is a thread for this only.

I know, it's called Triangle Away. But it doesn't work always and it's recommended that you freeze it before flashing.

you have to unlock bootloader in Sony phones too but you can also relock it. All this can be be through sony's official site and I think you get your warranty back after locking bootloader again, I read it somewhere (perhaps in Sony's site) dunno where. Can't say anything for sure though.

No you can't, there is a way to unlock it without using their website but it requires using some weird testing pins on the motherboard and it's a bit risky.

I looked it up for a friend who has a Neo V

The triangle and the flash counter are gone the minute you flash an official Samsung ROM via ODIN. Have done (and checked) this 3-4 times.

My flash counter is 0 (from 27) and device status is "normal".

Android noob here, i asked for suggestions n Erodov to make my wifi tethering on At&t htc one x start working.

one of the members suggested the following steps,

Unlock bootloader
Install recovery
Flash ROM
Flash Kernal
I have no idea how to perform any of these steps, searching for it online is only exposing me to some technical jargons, can any 1 give me a noob friendly way to do it

Pretty sure you don't need to do all that just to enable tethering.. Rooting should be enough along with some tinkering..

Edit: Check this if it works for you. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1677261 You do need to root the phone before hand by using superoneclick or something... Usually I don't recomment using these one click methods as they can cause unknown issues as well but since you are completely new to Android (and I think linux), I guess you'd have to go the one click route.
