The Android Thread

The only reason I'm even aware of it is because my trusty iPhone 4 (which is at 14% battery since I haven't charged it since I got my n4) keeps promptly buzzing with notifications for my various apps while the kingly n4 sitting right next to me doesn't give a sh*t. Push notifications (whether on wifi or not) became a trivial feature like 5 years ago. This is a big miss by Google!

Wow this is news to me. This not being a big bug somehow does not feel right. No notifications for emails and apps , that's a big goof up. Was planning to get this phone soon. Will research more on this. I'm sure somebody over at xda would have fixed it by now.

Edit: saw the link above and it has the xda thread linked already with the solution and flashable zips..

It's not no notification. It's delayed notification. Sometimes it's 1-2 minutes but sometimes it's much longer 15-20 min. I don't know if everyone is facing this issue but a significant number of people are. There are multiple threads on the Internet about it. It's surprising none of the mainstream tech blogs/sites have reported it. Nor was it captured in any review.

@sixthsense - It's a Nexus 4

@Shantz - In the thread the Google rep does mention that the issue is with a Qualcomm driver :P People in the thread seem pretty pissed with Google for not having solved this issue for so long. It's been out there since November. I'm just glad it's not a hardware issue. But it still sucks that it exists. I don't know why more people haven't made a big deal about it.

yeah, thats why i mentioned that the comment was made on 16th jan, so probably google notified us and got the fix (or confirmation) around that date or later on, so it;s not a part of 4.2.2.

It's not just an issue with gmail. Most apps have this issue. Can you try the same test (sending an email to yourself) with WIFI set to off. My guess is that you would get the notification instantly. The issue only happens when WIFI is on.

Yea, sent myself an email while on 3G. Notification was instant. Same on wifi and it didn't come through.

Then again, I get tons of Twitter push notifications on wifi all day long. So not really sure what's up here.

Strangely enough I still haven't gotten the OTA notification for 4.2.2. :|

And I'm kinda lazy here cos I have plenty to do on weekends apart from flashing my phone.

Heard there's some way to force it (probably anecdotal but yea). Apparently it involves force stopping some specific Google services or something and then checking for a system update.

edit - from some forum comment. Might as well try it - Go to settings> apps>all> find Google services framework then force close and clear cache. After that go to about phone in settings and check for update. It should say something like last checked for update November 1970. Can take a few tries before it says 4.2 is available.

thanks. I already tried earlier and it didn't work. Will give it a few more attempts tonight.

EDIT: Whether I try it through the settings menu or Titanium backup, the cache for that app just won't clear even after FC'ing it. It remembers perfectly when I last checked for an update. :|

Which is the best custom Rom got s3 currently? And a stable version too without any major bugs?

Wanam lite mr2 running with the boefella or the siyah kernel. This is if you want the stock rom features like smart stay etc. Boefella would be the fastest and the most battery optimized kernel you can run with this rom. Siyah is not too bad either if you want to dual boot.

Any other aosp based rom would definately be faster than the above, just that it would be devoid of any samsung features. I liked the miui rom and set it up as a secondary rom on dual boot with primary being wanam lite.

You will love CM10.1 if you like the stock Android look and feel. A very light rom (only 170 mb odd) and its very stable. EVERYTHING works. I am on nightlies, and still I use it as my daily rom. I suggest you atleast try it out because it's that damn good.
