Recommend a GPS for a car.

Hi guys,

A very good friend of mine just bought a Suzuki Swift, and he's hell bent on installing a good GPS navigator in his car. Now, I am trying to google and get my answer, but I would really appreciate input from you guys who know something about this and who have one of these installed in their cars :wOOtjumpy:

Which brand and model number would you recommend ? We would obviously prefer to invest in one that actually works very good on Indian roads, good maps, etc., and one that has good overall support :)

Any help and advice in this matter would be HIGHLY APPRECIATED.

Thanx a lot in advance guys :)

I googled and also searched on TE, and saw the various models on mapmyindia.com :) They also have in "Partner Products" a Garmin Nuvi. Not sure how good it is, but it seems it's a US brand, etc. I'll keep digging for more info.

Meanwhile, any input from you guys would be highly appreciated :)

I use Google Maps on my GPS phone - it's very very good and free. I've checked it in outskirts of Gwalior and it still shows the correct turns. I've even tried it in the mountains and no hassles.

I used Google+GPS on the roads of Bangalore. Even though it did show the routes correctly, sometimes the routes did not turn out to be the optimal ones, mainly because they were not updated based on what is going on, on these routes. For example the Metro construction here has played havoc with the usual routes.

I have heard very highly of Map My India. apparently, they are updated frequently so that should take care of the above problem that I mentioned. Or he can use one of those Bluetooth based GPS devices that can be mounted on the car windshield and when coupled with your mobile phone, can use Google maps or other such alternatives to show the routes.

best is to use google maps..

mapmyindia etc are ok but not that good.. they dont have as extensive search as gmaps gives you.. plus gmaps also has lot of database about shops/hotels/locations (POIs) even if you dont know the exact address..

Even updates wise, gmaps updates are very regular while other solutions aren't that much regular plus the free updates are only for some time after which they become paid..

The only drawback with gmaps is that you need a data connection.. there are ways available to cache all maps offline but they do not provide the real power of gmaps i.e. search..

I've tried all of them and finally use gmaps and/or google navigaion with my phone..

This will be much cheaper as well..

^The search is amazing and the tagging by the community is really helpful. But some tags are placed incorrectly. I guess paid things like Mapmyindia won't have this problem.

Btw, Bombay is very well mapped. Still nothing like the enormous detail American cities are mapped in. For Nokia Maps, the New York files are 3 times the size of the all India map (only 8 cities I think).

I have had a couple of issues with wrong tagging on gmaps - went to the other side of Chandigarh looking for a hotel. However, if you know the general area (which can be found from the map anyways) the street directions are pretty good. It's not always optimal because of traffic / construction / impromptu pot holes but overall very good - and free.

I know - plus it's easy to see the signs. I shudder to think what would've happened if I was in Delhi and ended up in Rohini if I was looking for Nehru Place - might end up looking for a life reset button.
