Dungeon Siege 3

Since I've already paid for the game I don't think I'll be bothering with the demo.

BTW I've heard that armor doesn't change the appearance of your character(?) If that's true then it's a massive downer! Dressing up my characters is part of the reason why I play such games.

I liked them. Think of a more tactical party-based Diablo and you'll get the idea.

But the Steam version is quite expensive even with the freebies considering DS3 is just 699/- here.

Yeah. It is pretty much like Diablo, except with lots more color. But Gods! What cheezy dialogues! Who wrote them? a 15 year old?

Steam is actually cheap, its around 49$ .. the OZ version is 60$+. But then again, ths aint a game I am that eager to jump into. I guess I will get my game when I return.

About 3 hours in, impressions so far...

- Started out pretty slow, I was quite underwhelmed at first. The combat lacks punch and the physics are laughable, you hit a guy with your sword and he goes flying offscreen . The game also feels like a budget game despite coming from a mainstream developer/publisher. However it gets its hooks into you once you play for an hour and figure out the mechanics. After that it becomes as addictive as any clickfest action RPG.

- The character upgrade system is great and different from most similar games. It's not a Diablo-like skill tree again, which is a refreshing change. I'm playing as the melee dude Lucas and the secondary powers and upgrades are pretty cool so far. You can freely switch between a 2-handed heavy sword and a sword/shield combo during battle depending on the situation. There are no potions in the game and health is restored via orbs dropped by enemies (as seen in D3) or character skills. I kinda like the fast-paced approach to the tried and tested formula.

- The inventory system is where I have a problem. It's unnecessarily clunky (mainly because it's designed for consoles) but gets the job done. It could have been a lot better if they had gone with a traditional Diablo-like system. However, what really sucks is that other than the weapons equipped gear does not change the appearance of characters. It was one of my main complaints with DA2 and its back here. I don't know if Obsidian got lazy or they just think that their character designs are great. I really think it's the former because the characters look bland as hell (except for the gunslinger Katarina )

- The controls are very good as long as you plug in an X360 controller. The camera sometimes goes haywire but for the most part it is quite playable. Trust me, the controller is the only proper way to play this game, the KB+Mouse controls are FUBAR.

- I have heard a lot of complaints about the confusing stats on weapons and gear. However the in-game Help Guide explains each and every thing in detail. I don't think most reviewers even bothered to look there. In fact the game even drops a tutorial hint on the Help Guide. The loot is disappointing though, just equip the rarest/costliest gear and sell the rest. It definitely needs more work.

- Story is okay with decent voice acting and there are situations where you can choose to be a selfless do-gooder or a selfish bastard. This affects some secondary bonuses your character earns from time to time and could potentially affect the story later.

- Graphics look good from an artistic POV and the game is surprisingly lightweight and runs well even with everything maxed out (TQ is more demanding than this). The floaty physics however make characters seem disconnected from the surroundings.

- Lastly, the game has very little to the with the previous DS games. It plays very differently and the emphasis is on action than tactics.

Overall I am pleased with the game. It has the addictive quality that games of this kind usually have (just one one quest, just one more level... and I'll call it a day) and at 699/- it's a great deal. Just don't go in with very high expectations.
