The box requires 2 cables from dish to box while the older standard one required only one. I think this is so that you can record 2 channels simultaneously or record one channel and watch another simultaneously. Edit: btw, it looks like the hd plus is selling like hot cakes. The guy who came to install at my place was carrying around 10 more boxes just for around 500 m area around my house and said that he is having a hard time installing so many boxes every day.. Good news for you.. I just asked my brother (he works at NDS, who design these STBs and provide software for most of the guys across the world including tata sky & airtel in India) and he said that splitter should work for background recording as well. The only thing is that quality loss might be there depending on the quality of the splitter and hence generally 2 separate outputs from LNB itself are preferred but not mandatory.
