Custom Duties!!! How do they charge ?

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I wanna know. How do they charge you custom duties ? Whats their method ? Last I read, a person is NOT charged any customs if the stuff he imports is LOWER OR EXACTLY at 200 US Dollars. If the bill price goes above that, we need to pay customs. Is that true ? If yes, then whats the percentage ? I know there might be different percentages for different categories but what about gaming related stuff like game discs, modchips, controllers, etc.

I remember there was a thread about this way back on the older forums where a dude had made a list of "Know your rights" thingie with regards to customs and what you can boldly say at the customs office :P

So, care to help me out with that. I did the search but couldn't find that thread.

Thanx a lot :P

PS: I would request admins to pin this or that thread :)

Opps... I think this belongs in the import section. Please move it there :)

some guidelines based on my personal experience:

factors affecting custom duties:

1. invoice value - if under Rs. 10,000, then chances are you will not have to pay any customs (unless the goods are in some special import category OR you are using an international courier service like Fedex/DHL)

2. goods marked as GIFT are generally exempt from custom duties unless the officer in charge becomes suspicious (or conducts a random check) - size/weight of the parcel plays a role

3. shipping method used - if you use a mail service like royal mail (uk) or air mail (usps) or international speedpost/ems, then chances are that you might not have to pay customs (unless you are unlucky, but even then you can 'negotiate' the damages). BUT a private international courier company ala fedex/dhl are almost a guaranteed red target for custom checks (and duties)

the actually duties applicable amount to ~38% of the LANDED PRICE (dont ask me for a breakup, it's too confusing)

Thanx a lot for nailing it Vinit :)

But you know, this is all "upon chance". What are my RIGHTS? In which case am I legally obligated to pay customs ? and in which case can I fight it out ? How do I know whether what they've charged me is justified ?

Lol...sorry for asking this. You guys must be thinking...."GO TO THE f**kING CUSTOMS OFFICE AND CHECK IT OUT YOU RETARD" :P Hahahaha.....

An offtopic question i can use my ICICI Credit Card [ Visa ] for shopping on international website rite ?

Dude....of course you can :)

Edit: Lol...and why am I named Princess Peach :P
