Tata Sky or DishTV ?

Hi guys,

I recently shifted my home and am thinking of getting either Tata Sky or DishTV rather than local cable coz its gonna cost me almost the same price. I checked out both of their websites and the channels offered are almost the same. So now am a little confused which one should I go with. If any of you guys use either of their services, I would love to hear your input on this.

So, what do you guys recommend ? Should I get it or should I just stick with my regular cablewalla :P

Edit: Pros & Cons...

Local Cable...

Pros: 2 additional local channels playing fairly new Hindi movies during afternoon and nighttime, 2 additional local channels playing filmy music, 1 additional local channel featuring local news.

Cons: Not THAT good reception ? Sometimes the reception gets pretty f**ked up. Not all channels provide good quality picture. No reception if power failure in cabelwalla's house :P

Tata Sky or DishTV

Pros: Awesome DVD quality reception on all channels (?) {Question mark being as its yet to be experienced by me}, change language of channels available in multiple languages (?), availability of TV schedule :P, also On-Demand video ? :P

Cons: Don't know yet. Thats why this thread :P

Thanx for the help guys

all of them - be it the local cable station, tatasky or dishtv - SUCK!

i mean they use smart-card based STBs that employ some sort of analog-digital-analog conversion routines that supposedly enhances picture quality (but it introduces horrendous compression artifacts instead) -- the picture quality appears even worse on a HDTV (LCD/Plasma), not to mention the incorrect aspect ratio stretching when you try and view in full 16:9 mode.

i guess we'll just have to wait till channels are broadcast in HD.

V

ps: i'm interested in finding out if any DTH or local cable provider is offering STBs with component/digital outputs

Video on Demand costs money + I have personally seen that Dishtv as well Tatasky doesnt work during the rainy season due to clouds. It all depends where you stay. I have a cable and its pretty good. I am getting good reception but then again it might look shitty on an LCD TV. On the other hand TATAsky or DishTV look less shitty but do keep in mind that none of these are delivering HD content, hence grains...

using tata sky and i too was worried abt grainy picture quality on my lcd tvs but its not bad at all.... most channels are pretty much clear and one cant notice the pixelation .... imo only sports channels are a bit pixelated cuz of the amt of movement on screen....

all in al .... im pretty happy with tata sky .... (id take it over DTV)

I've Tata sky as of now and pic quality appears to be good so far....a lot better than the local cable TV (which is on my second TV). But its a rip-off since Tata sky adds/removes channels as per their wish. When I took the connection, Neo Sports/Active sports was part of the whole Rs 350 deal, now they say, from nov 1st u need to pay Rs 199 etc for that

You could also consider IPTV from MTNL. Its a lot cheaper than TataSky though Im not sure how good it is.

Reliance & Airtel are going to launch their DTH services and Reliance is also considering bringing IPTV to India.

I have four TVs at home. Two are hooked up to Tata Sky, One to the local cable guy's STB and one without the STB (analog cable TV).

Of the lot, Tata Sky wins hands down due to the following reasons:

- Good picture quality

- Great sound quality

- Consistent uptime (a few problems during monsoons but only during extremely heavy rains)

- Superb GUI interface

- Active Games :(

- Contests and promos during programs (press the "red" button)

- Decent pricing

- Excellent channel variety in the default package (barring certain regional channels)

I have cable + DD DTH ( pay only once ) at my place, no probs with either of, Cable walah has main office like 400 mtrs frm my place. Only once in whole year they disconnect the connection for Maintainance and in case during Kite flying festival wires are taken for threads...u get disconnected for 2 days, thats it!!!

and I am SATISFIED ! :(!!

since we are on the topic, regarding the showcase movies, i see always only three movies on the list - awarapan, honeymoon travels and naqaab. Now can I order whatever I want or I've to choose between only these three ?

The only reason why Dishtv caught my attention was because of them saying that they deliver stuff in DVD quality which means all the channels will be in 720x576 [PAL region] which is really good if you have a 720p HDTV but i have never cross checked the whole thing

I dont think they deliver content at that resolution considering that their STBs use composite output cables. Since composite cant handle content at that resolution, why waste bandwidth ?
