Official Nintendo Mag gives Galaxy 97%

"Super Mario Galaxy is one of the finest games we've ever played". Those are the words you wanted to hear, right?

Issue 23 of the Official Nintendo Magazine UK hits shelves tomorrow with the first English-written review of Miyamoto's platform stunner, and the big, fat 97 percent slapped on it means they like it quite a bit.

"It's funny because the thing that annoys us most is that its fantastic graphics show us the sort of games we could have been playing for the past year had some developers bothered to pull their finger out," reviewer Chris Scullion says, in praise of the lush visuals we've been shouting about for months.

Advertisement:

"Throughout the whole game the graphics constantly amaze, with stunning visual effects, some remarkably huge playing areas, and characters that are positively filled to the brim with personality," he continues.

"The sound is some of the best we've heard in a Mario game," he goes on to say, citing the mix of catchy new tunes with retro-tastic remixed classics (you can hear SMB. 3 music remixed in this video of the awesome Cookie Factory level).

"Some of the power-ups give a similar sense of nostalgia", he adds, noting the return of Fire and Invincible Mario, along with others "involving ice and bouncing" which they gladly chose not to reveal (no spoilers, thanks).

Gladly, it's not too easy either, says ONM. "While some of the missions are quite simple, others will test the skills of even the most dedicated Mario fans." Phew.

Their only complaint is of the "tacked on" second player Remote feature (which allows another player to fool around with their own pointer). But we were never bothered about that anyway.

Check out the full, spoiler-free six-page review in the Mario-covered ONM #23 on shelves tomorrow, along with a free metal Zelda Hylian Crest pin badge and some Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Games DS decals.

We'll have a review of our own closer to the game's launch on November 16.

Hidden Playable Character In Mario Galaxy Revealed

From Kotaku

http://kotaku.com/gaming/spoiler/hidden-pl...aled-317469.php

________________________________________________________________

In a rare leak for a Nintendo game, it appears scans of the Super Mario Galaxy strategy guide reveal a second, as yet unknown playable character. No, it's not the penguin shown above, but someone familiar. The secret character won't be available from the outset of the game and will, in fact, require a fairly high amount of item collecting to unlock.

While the alternate playable character probably won't come as a whopping surprise to longtime Nintendo fans, in the interest of helping some of our more sensitive readers spoiler-free, details on the secret are after the jump.

Yes, Luigi will be playable once again in a proper Super Mario adventure, but only after you've secured 120 stars, completed the purple coin missions, and defeated Bowser a second time. According to the alleged guide scan "Luigi jumps higher and further, and also runs faster, but has trouble stopping. They each have the same moves, such as the long-jump or backflip, but the difference in their basic jump, running speed, and stopping ability makes completing the game harder."

A nice little bonus that ensures I'll be getting every damn star in the game.

Super Mario Galaxy Reviewed by 1UP, score -

9.5 out of 10

In short, Galaxy is one of the most impressive, engrossing games in recent memory -- and quite the contrast to the rest of this year's triple-A gaming crop, which tends toward the dark, the M-rated, and the first-person perspective. Gaming may be growing up (per se), but gamers will always appreciate beautifully polished gameplay and inventive design...even if it's sugarcoated with squeaky baby stars and a goofy cartoon of a hero. Galaxy proves that Mario matters just as much today as he did 25 years ago, and that makes him one of a kind in this medium. But don't play Galaxy simply because Mario is the timeless godfather of gaming. No, play Galaxy because it's fantastic.

Super Mario Galaxy At A Glance

PROS:

* The level design is superb and the new gameplay mechanics reinvigorate the Mario franchise.

* Wonderful visual style really takes full advantage of the Wii's capabilities.

* Definitely lives up to the high standard of previous Mario games. Best title in the franchise since Mario 64.

CONS:

* It may take some players a while to adjust to the game's unique gameplay.

* The camera moves in strange ways during the space levels. Hope you're not prone to motion-sickness!

* The multiplayer mode is weak and feels tacked on.
