Brad Pitt to play leading role in Red Dead Redemption movie?

Recommended Posts

Hollywood sources say prolific heartthrob actor will play John Marston in film based on Rockstar Games' popular Western.

What we heard: In November 2009 Brad Pitt's production companies Reliance Big Entertainment and Plan B Entertainment bought the rights to the forthcoming Dark Void film, but that may not be the only movie project tied to the storied actor.

Sources told the Hollywood news outlet Showbizspy that Brad Pitt is the "hot favorite" to star in an upcoming film based on the events of Rockstar Games' critically lauded and comercially successful Western, Red Dead Redemption. The sources say the Fight Club and Meet Joe Black star will play the game's troubled protagonist, John Marston.

See the resemblance?

“This is an exciting project with a great character at the center of it,” a source told the website. The idea is to make this in the style of an epic Western movie but with a few modern touches. Brad is perfect for the role and he is being given first refusal.”

Unfortunately, the report did not include the names of possible supporting cast members, a projected release date for the film, or any other details on the project.

The official story: A Rockstar Games representative told GameSpot "We do not comment on rumor or speculation."

Bogus or not bogus?: Today's rumor is the first mention of a Red Dead Redemption film. While fans may be excited about the prospect of a film based on the game, if the project is real, it's likely only in the very early planning stages.

Further, Pitt is one of Hollywood's biggest stars, and he is likely offered "first refusal"--the ability to be the first actor to say no to a project--frequently. If the project is indeed real, Pitt may pass on the project, leaving the Marston role open to another actor.

Bleh. Look what they (including Jerry Bruckheimer) did to Prince Of Persia The Sands Of Time. That's what they create with a $200 f***in million dollar budget. And RDR is probably too long to effectively capture the story in 2-3 hrs.

And, besides I'm somewhat selfish about this stuff - Great video game stories should be available to gamers only. Why should non-gamers get this stuff?!

haha.. i know how this rumor got started..

there was this article- http://movies.ign.com/articles/111/1116599p1.html - on ign about their wishlist for a RdR movie. what to put, what not to put. Was pretty neat, their wish list also liked that they wanted the movie to be dark, gritty with some black humor like the game and that they wanted it to be like The Proposition (epic western). Then some shmuck started how good it would be to have Pitt as the lead and well.. spread like a wild forest fire.

I am 95% sure if there is a movie made, it will be a sorry caricature of the game. As for Brad Pitt, he is a good choice, he is a good actor with a variety of range (smith, snatch, fight club and the obvious comparison here- assassination of jesse james). Because of his pretty face and off screen life his acting is often forgotten by people.. but could pull it off.

ah well.. rumors, hopes.. etc.

LOL, no point in making a R* game into a movie. Most of their games are inspired from movies, it'll be just like remix of the already existing movies and nothing else

Exactly.. and frankly, making a Western starring Pitt isn't a bad idea at all. If they just dump the RDR aspect and make a normal movie, I'd be happy :D

^^ Watch The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

BTW, wasn't Brad Pitt and his production company making a Dark Void movie some time ago? :giggle:

And Ne0 is right, Rockstar's games are mostly based on movie cliches. What's the point of making a movie based on something that's already based on movies?
