lcd TV vs lcd monitor

I am looking to get a new 1080p screen for my gaming needs with PS3 and xbox 360. I notice that given the same size at 1080p the monitors are much cheaper than the TVs. Is there any disadvantage to using a monitor since they are so much cheaper? What the difference between a hdmi capable monitor with built in speakers at 1080p 23inch and a lcd tv 1080p 23inches? Can the moniter be used to watch TV apart from gaming?

Ok here is the thing

1. A TV can directly take in Analog Signals like those Cable TV signals where as a monitor does not have it.

2. A TV will have in built speakers unlike any convention LCD monitor so you do not need any other peripheral for audio unlike a monitor.

3. Multiple inputs for convenience is why TV rocks.

I am not sure statistically how good a TV is better than a Monitor but here is another thing the bigger the size of the monitor the more expensive it is when compared to a LCD TV.

Take this for example,

DELL 27" monitor is worth Rs. 40-45,000 whereas a conventional FULL HD TV will cost Rs. 35 - 40,000.

I don't think you can go wrong with a monitor. Personally, I prefer my monitor (22", 1680*1050) for gaming (over a full HD TV, 32"). I am not sure, but I believe the price difference is due to the computer/mainstream split. Also, TVs have a few extras that monitors don't. Monitors can be used for TV - some models come with support (I think). That or TV through a computer/tuner card, I guess?

I'd recommend a monitor if the size is the same (price difference), or (1) large screen TV for single player and (2) 19-22" monitor for multiplayer.

me too was in a confusion sometime back but thn i took a LED monitor . full HD. Dynamic contrast ratio 1 crore : 1. price = 14.5k

total paisa vasool

you do know that dynamic contrast ratio is a marketing gimmick, right. Actual contrast ratio for a monitor is usually in range of "500-800 : 1".

@OP

tv's have more connectivity options, and better contrast ratio. But for less than 26inch, monitor is better deal than tv.

22/23 inches are a bit too small for gaming imo. I have a 32 inch hd tv and a 21 inch lcd monitor. I rarely use my PC for gaming these days cos after playing on the 32 inch screen, my 21 inch monitor feels tiny.

Imo you should go for a 32 inch hd tv. They're cheap these days and you could use them to watch regular cable tv.

I was in the same dilema and then visited a store for checking out LCD/LED Tv. The price tag of 36k for 32" Samsung LCD Tv, 5series, Full HD, with USB option and with 0% interest EMI option was too tempting and the screen looked perfect for gaming. But then limited space of my room made decide on monitor instead. Then I saw a couple of 22"-24" monitor and felt that the screen size was too small for gaming.

So I am back to where I had started. Thanks to this thread, I can get my mind cleared too.

To decide between Tv and Monitor, you have to decide if you need option of both Tv and Gaming from one screen?

Here's the deal.....you can sit very close to monitors while gaming wheras you can stay back in your couch when gaming in a TV.....that's the difference.

If you have someone coming back from the states get an HD projector. Costs about $700. Totally worth it. Pair it with a cheap home theatre and your entire wall becomes the screen. Then try playing UT3 on it. Satisfaction.

Of course it does. My point is, a mid size monitor, say a 22 incher may be equivalent to a 29 or 30 inch TV, because of the natural difference viewing distance.

That does not make any sense at all.

A small monitor would require you to sit quite close to it or otherwise, things would look puny. Whereas on a medium sized tv, you can afford to sit farther. But that doesn't mean you should sit farther.

If u are buying a LCD TV,buy at least a 32'' Full HD one.A good one will cost u at least 35k.If u r buying a monitor,u will get a good 24" inch under 15k.

1080p doesn't make much of a difference for a 32 incher. I recently bought a new tv and I've examined quite a lot of panels side by side and failed to notice much of a difference between a 720p panel and a 1080p panel from a normal viewing distance. You'll have to stand quite close to the tv's to even notice a slight difference.

However, the differences start to become obvious once you cross the 40 inch mark. My advice is, go for a 720p panel if you're buying a 32inch tv. Just make sure it has loads of connectivity options, good response time and good levels of color reproduction. Also, IPS panels are superior to other types of LCD panels.
