DmC Devil May Cry

Okay so on a serious note... yeah I mean't it. I actually like the game, I mean really like the game. Currently I'm on the last mission on DMD mode and according to Steam I have put in 36 hours into the game so far. So I think I have played enough to judge it on it's own and against the past titles.

Like everyone I was super-pissed at the annoucement trailers and the redesign, just look at the first few pages of the thread. I had pretty much boycotted the game and was so sure I won't even buy it. And right now I must admit I have been proven wrong. Ninja Theory has not only successfully revamped the franchise but also created an amazing action game which is accessible and yet pretty hardcore if you turn up the difficulty. To me it sits right alongside the best action games of this gen (for me it's DMC4, Bayonetta, Vanquish).

Let me start off with the character redesign. Yes I was f**king pissed at the junkie/zombie Dante when he was first unveiled. It was definitely the worst thing that could happen to the character. But NT got the hint and they have changed the design signifcantly. The actual in-game Dante looks pretty cool and suits the whole theme. I love classic Dante but I don't mind Dante (or Donte as he's called) too. I tend to think of it as Classic Marvel vs Ultimate Marvel universe. I think the worst thing associated with the game is the marketing. The trailers portray him as this annoying foul-mouthed douche when he certainly is not like that in the game. He starts off as cocky bastard but his character undergoes major changes through the game. It's hard to listen to the closing conversations and watch the game's final scenes and still think of him as a douche.

Now the most important thing - the combat. I have played the past games extensively (with the exception of 2, which I have played only once) and in comparison DmC is a considerably easy game. On the hardest default difficulty (Nephilim) it's easier than the easiest difficulties in the past games. It's extremely easy to S-rank missions and get SSS during combat. However SoS and DMD up the challenge significantly especially with the remixed enemy waves. Some combinations are seriously challenging (witch + 2 dreamrunners, group of harpies + two fattys, witch + rages etc). The weapon selection is pretty nice and it's nice to be able to access them quickly at any time. The only complaint I have here is the colored enemies which require a specific weapon. It breaks the flow of the game and forces you into similar tactics each time. But overall the combat is suitably deep and rewarding, plus looks great in motion. Love the way Dante gets carried by the momentum of swings.

Lastly the game has some amazing production values. Never has the story been delivered in such a consistent manner in a DMC game. The animations, facial expressions and voice acting are top notch stuff. The music is alright I suppose and fits the game.

There are some real highlights, I especially love the night club mission, the music, visuals and level design, everything comes together in that level. The boss fights, although very easy (even on DMD) are nice setpieces, especially Bob Barbas. He's an easy boss but very well executed. Gave me strong TRON vibes.

I am currently on my third playthrough and I'm willing to go through it one more time to get the achievements I have missed. I also might give Hell or Hell a try with Super Dante of course (I am not THAT hardcore) and I'm desperately waiting for Bloody Palace and Vergil's Downfall (day one).

I think people should jump off the hate bandwagon and give it a shot. It's an awesome action game which you seriously should not miss. DmC is better than no DMC at all. I think if the game doesn't do well in sales (which it isn't so far) Capcom will most likely kill the franchise rather than coming out with DMC5. I personally want the game to do well so we get a DmC 2. I hope this doesn't become POP 2008 (another reboot few loved but almost everyone hated).

He wasn't kidding when he said long.

Well said, Ty. I thought it was pretty well made too. Usual NT quality although I do miss a lock on.

More than the haters, I'm worried about how much longer NT can go without a commercial success.

Also since he mentioned POP 2008. It was a POP game just in name, if you judge it on its own, it was amazing. I love that game to bits. The art style, the combat,it was one of the rare games in which making the combat rare made it all the more charming

The DLC ending was the only f**ked up part though.
