oh i thought u wanted to know only about Unreal engine. Some games are based on the Valve's source engine i.e. Team Fortress 2, Half-Life 2, Left for Dead, Counter Strike Source etc.

Unreal and Source are the most used engines in games these days. Mostly all other games have their own engines.

Most game engines are developed and used within studios. You won't get to try them without license. However the most successful commercial game engine Unreal Engine 3.0 is completely free for non-commercial use. http://www.udk.com/

Unfortunately I don't think any academy here in India offer you a course in game engine programming. You have start over with basic programming languages(like C/C++) and work your way in to 3D API's. For graphic artists you should start with 3D studio max etc. You can get better advise from someone working in the field but its safe to say its not an easy task to get in to the game development industry.

Getting a job in game art totally depends on your art skills so if a institutes who has great placement doesn't guarantee you a job unless you have those art skills. AIGA has good placement records though, placements like in Dhruva Interactive, Technicolor India etc.
