Gore Verbinski (Pirates of the Caribbean, The Ring) is making a Bioshock movie!

Publisher Take Two has inked its first movie deal. According to Variety, underwater corridor FPS BioShock is getting a big Hollywood film adaptation. The biggest film-to-game deal since Peter Jackson's ill-fated Halo movie, the BioShock Universal produced flick will be helmed by Pirates of the Caribbean director Gore Verbinski. Universal is in talks with Oscar nominated scribe John Logan (The Aviator) to do the script. Verbinski has been talking with BioShock creator Ken Levine on a regular basis about the project, but no word what official capacity he'll take. Verbinski says he plans on making an R-rate film and work will begin once there's a quality script. About BioShock, Verbinski says:

_______________

Of all the games out there, I think Bioshock is the one that's the most engaging. I think the whole utopia-gone-wrong story that's cleverly unveiled to players is brimming with cinematic potential.

_______________

BioShock's great and all, but perhaps Verbinski needs to play some more games. He has! Portal, he's played that, and seems to have his eye on turning that into a feature film getting involved in possibly making games: "I hope to make it up to Valve. "Portal" is one of my favorites. For now, it's just an open dialogue about how far we can push this thing." While we're not entirely convinced Verbinski has the directing chops (Doesn't BioShock need more than just a stylist?), we pretty sure this film is going to open up a floodgates for even more big time Hollywood film adaptations. For better or worse, for better or worse. Verbinski Interview [Variety]

I'm not so sure how to react, on one hand it's cool news but I'd prefer people let BioShock stay the way it is.

^^ It's in some ancient Mayan language. But hats off to Mr Gibson by not having them speak english (looking at you Mr Emmerich!). Still the movie has subtitles and it's not really about dialog anyway.

^^ Same here... I am not entirely sure whether the movie is a good idea. And I am not sure about Verbinski either, someone more quirky would be better suited!

p.s: Just wondering what Sanjay Leela would do with the color palette and set art pieces if he were to direct Bioshock! :)

^^ Verbinski is a good choice. He was able to convert a Disney ride to a trilogy of worldwide blockbusters. The Ring showed he can do atmospheric horror and has experience with creepy little girls. I feel he's a good choice. Bioshock needs to look epic as well as have that creepy element.

I enjoyed the 'Mexican' and 'Weatherman' more than the ones you mentioned. Pirates 1 was the best. And I have no doubts about his 'blockbusterization' abilities, but I feel someone like Christophe Gans (Silent Hill) would make for a better choice. Making it creepy and epic is necessary, but from my gamer perspective, I want it to capture the spirit of the game and not lead to any form of dilution.

Silent hill may not have bought in the greenbacks but did leave majority of the franchise's fans satisfied!

p.s: Lets wait and watch, I am just happy it is not been given to Michael Bay :)

Take-Two Interactive Software Inc said on Friday that "Pirates of the Caribbean" director Gore Verbinski will make a movie version of "BioShock," its hit video game about an underwater utopia gone disastrously wrong.

The movie will be made by Universal Pictures, a unit of NBC Universal owned by General Electric Co , and John Logan, the screenwriter behind "Gladiator" and "Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street," was in talks to pen the script, Take-Two said.

"Gore is an avid video gamer and true fan of 'BioShock'. That was extremely important to us in deciding to move forward with this project," Christoph Hartmann, president of Take-Two's 2K Games label, said in a statement.

Take-Two did not disclose financial terms of the deal or other details, such as when the film would be released. The company is the target of a $2 billion takeover bid by rival game publisher Electronic Arts Inc .

Released last August for Microsoft Corp's Xbox 360 game console, "BioShock" won praise for its complex story, haunting art deco atmosphere and creepy characters such as Big Daddies and Little Sisters.

"BioShock" has sold more than 2 million copies and Take-Two is working on a sequel.

The "BioShock" movie deal is the latest sign of the growing importance of video games in popular culture.

Earlier this week, Take-Two said its "Grand Theft Auto 4" criminal action game racked up more than $500 million in global sales in its first week.

That handily topped Hollywood's biggest film debut, Verbinski's "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End", which pulled in $406 million in global box office receipts in its first six days.

Microsoft made headlines when it signed "Lord of the Rings" director Peter Jackson to produce a movie adaptation of its hit "Halo" video game, but the project was put on hold in 2006 when financial backers Universal and 20th Century Fox, a unit of News Corp pulled out of the deal.
