Watched NYSM, pretty nice first half but just messed up towards the end. Good watch though.

Not a big fan of Mark Ruffalo, his straight outta bed look is just so common.

And finally watched Citizen Kane, I know. Well-made movie considering the time it was made.

It was pretentious then, it is a big bag of pretentious, snob valuator now. Not accusing you Udham, you may have good reasons to like it; but i have had many a conversation with people calming it to be the best in the world and most of them have it a*s backwards, they hear from someone about Citizen Kane's epicness and just slide along to praise it in order to not miss the hype train.

It is like the Ayn Rand of movies, loved by people who seem and claim to be smart but arent really.

Again, am not putting you in that bracket Udham. It just an observation.

It ain't epic, mediocre screenplay, bland biographical approach/

but for that time, it surely has some good production values and better non-linear approach of story-telling.

People who watched in 50s and 60s might have even called it ahead of its time, now all those plus points are quite irrelevant.

I dont know any guy who watched it in 50-60s. I am talking about people in present generation, in 20s-30s who claim it to be the best movie ever ! which it certainly is not. Sure it has got great cinematography, way ahead of its time and in many ways changed the technique used in it for future films, but that is about it. It is boring and bland, like you said.

It is quite similar to Avatar insofar as having huge pre release hype spanning years, big hollywood backing and a big leap in technical aspect AND having bare bones plot, below avg storytelling and uninspiring acting. However Avatar was very entertaining for one watch with great set pieces, fights and explosions, unlike Citizen Kane where it is just an achievement if one does not manage to nod off at lest once while watching it.

Look I am not hating the movie, it is not bad, it is an ok attempt at a biography (made without the permission of the said figure btw) with good tech for its time; what riles me up is the wanton hype and reverence that it has managed to receive, and still does. I have seen most of the movies that are listed in the various Top (insert number) lists by reputed sources and while i may not agree with the rankings, i can see why they were listed, almost all have some stand alone positive quality- Godfather, Casablanca, Swashank Redemption.. etc. Only one that has baffled me is Citizen Kane, a ubiquitous presence near the top on such lists. I just wish some influential entity just up and calls the naked-ness of the emperor here.

Thing is though, you cant analyze or critique Citizen Kane in a time vacuum. It doesnt work that way. I watched The Graduate a long time ago and felt exactly the same. By itself, in a vacuum, its an over rated, bland, average film with few redeeming qualities. And there is nothing wrong with that opinion. But if you look into it further, you realize that if you think like that you miss the context. And context is everything. You can argue whether its a great film or not but you cannot argue that its an incredibly important film.

Dismissing it purely for its quality is the equivalent of watching a cave painting made by man thousands of years ago and saying "whats the big deal, my 7 year old niece draws better than that.". You cant say that and move on because its not just about the quality of the product you are consuming but the contribution it makes to the timeline of humanity.

Because without those stick figure scrawls in a cave, you dont have a Mona Lisa.

So you dont have to like CK as a film, but you do have to appreciate its existence.

Having said all of that. Its dull as hell, isnt it. :P

Also that Hobbit poster. Hook it up in my veins NOW!

I never bothered to take note of them before, but do we have advance screenings ? Specifically, will there be one for Man of Steel in Mumbai on Thursday (IMAX most preferred option)? I am going out of town on Friday and not sure whether I will be able to catch it later :(
