I actually thought the story was pretty good. It sets the movie apart from being a 'mindless action movie' and the action scenes don't feel like 'action for action's sake'. This is the movie Gareth Evans wanted to make but he had to settle for a 'demo' (a.k.a. The Raid Redemption) to get the funding, so this isn't exactly more of the same. I'd say Raid 1 is short prequel story to the actual plot. The movie is more of a crime drama interspersed with action scenes and then it switches to high gear in the last hour and becomes non-stop action. There are some plot holes which I noticed when I watched it again but it doesn't detract from the experience. Try watching the movie in it's original language. It's far better than the horrendous English dub.

Also I don't really get the complaints about acting, you have to understand that some of the 'actors' are actually stuntmen and fight choreographers but the ones who are actually actors did a fine job. I personally thought that the guy who played Bangun (the Indonesian crime lord), Uco (his son) were good and the bad guy was actually quite enjoyable to watch as well. The movie is also shot brilliantly. Just look at the framing of certain shots. The use of colors and lighting is fantastic. A huge step up from the first one. Then again, I don't really like to compare the two. They're very different movies and good in their own way.

Then you have the action which everyone will agree is the strongest part. The final 40 minutes or so are an action lover's wet dream. It just keeps building up. Very intense stuff. Also look at how the car chase is shot. Full of long takes and clean direction. There's one shot where the camera moves into one car, shows us the action then flies out and into another - all in one take. I seriously wonder how they did it. It's something I never noticed in my first watch because I was so absorbed in the action. Amazing stuff.

There are rumours floating around that The Raid 3 will have Tony Jaa...

I really did think the acting was bad (probably because of the terrible dubbing). Bangun and the bad guy were decent but the rest of the cast was so bad, it brought down the movie a lot in my eyes. For the most part, the movie felt like how a Bollywood movie feels when it tries to ape Hollywood.

And the actors being stuntmen isn't really an excuse IMO. When most of your actors are stuntmen, you're better off going for a mindless action movie rather than making them pull off a serious plot.

Agree with you on everything else you said about the action and how beautifully some of the scenes were shot. It really is amazing how they managed to pull off some of the action scenes.

Children of Men had some ridiculously good car scenes as well. The first time I saw them I was literally in awe.

The long one-shot scenes in Children of Men were mind-blowing. With Gravity, I think one-shot scenes have now become a trademark of Cuaron :P

Yes, that and there's one more shot like that. In the movie they're actually longer, more seamless scenes.

Children of Men did something similar yeah but that was confined to one car, plus there's the huge uprising scene at the end, though it includes subtle cuts. I seriously LOVE long takes. It's moviemaking at it's best.

Also do check out the hospital shootout in John Woo's Hard Boiled.

You really cannot judge acting when someone else is speaking for the person IMO, especially with fake accents and dialog that's written to sync with the mouth movements. That said yeah I agree the acting is weak in places but they also got some good actors. I've read that many of them are famous Indonesian and Japanese actors. The movie tries to pull off an ambitious plot along with the trademark action. And for the most part it succeeds. It's on par with John Woo's old HK action flicks.

Still haven't watched Raid 1...thanks to that English dub :( I watched Dredd(2012) first, then heard this movie is way better.

Dredd is good but slightly overrated. It has the same basic premise but it's a coincidence and the way the movie plays out differs quite a bit. The style of action is also vastly different. Dredd is all about guns while guns are largely abandoned after the first half hour in The Raid.

Hollywood is actually doing a proper remake of The Raid with American actors. Gareth Evans is producing so hopefully it won't be a complete disaster.

Talking about Raid 2, the action was mind-blowing and in agood quantity.

But yeah, too muc padding with the story which was 'decent' at best and neot neccesary.

But the action scenes were truely one of the best ever. This was my favortie scene in the entire movie..

That would be fine, interspecies relationships are cutting edge. There is talk of rc drones being designed for mimicking reproductive activities as well.

Actually the foundation for this has already been laid ...(no pun intended) as simple battery operated devices do fit the definition of machine.

Looking at the situation from a clinical perspective, it would make sense for high net worth individuals to marry a robot, --a self-cleaning, with a carbon fibre skeleton and silicone flesh, an assortment of wigs, various sets of eyeballs and other interchangeable parts, and of course, a three command, capacity, clap or voice activated "brain".

There's no baggage, no hassle, no headaches, and of course risk of material loss in a divorce.

That is, until AI hits critical mass.

aaaahhh, I hadn't thought of that, I was just going to use Bobby the rabbit for the obvious feng shui benefits, but what you said really opens things up. always good to have options.

I'm not familiar with rabbit and/or mammal based feng shui or the benefits that may be derived from that activity.
I'll have to analyze the data. Interesting your choice of a male wabbit. Silly me, assuming that an act of bestiality would inherently be of opposite genders even though the species was different.

I assure you, it's simply a cobweb from the past and not indicative of any behaviorally defined bad blood towards any one or any group, festering beneath the surface.

It will be interesting to watch the eventual showdown between the interspecies relationship/marriage community and the status quo, which ironically enough may well include members of a segment of the population presently waging their own battle for equal rights.

If they can re-write the definition of marriage to one male and one female instead of one man and one woman, then legally from a clinical perspective, there would be no justification for subjugating the interspecies group.

Now that the line between right and wrong, normal and abnormal etc has been moved, just who is to say exactly how far it should move?

The present generation, like ALL of those who preceded them, view themselves as cutting edge and the end of the line as far as these matters are concerned. However, they, like all of their predecessors, shall not be the end of it. They will be experiencing a generation gap with their own offspring.

By that time, there may well be animal/human hybrids
Their point will also be inclusion and equality...
Even though there is not one species on this planet that actually strives to be equal rather than dominant.

lol, talk about a script for a movie... :P

Unlike Sajid Khan, Bay actually made good movies... Bad Boys, The Rock and even the first Transformers. Hell even Armageddon is an awesome guilty pleasure movie.

I know it's going to be sh*t like the last two but still - tickets booked for Bayformers 4 tonight!

I don't get this. Why are you going to watch it when you know it's going to be sh*t? It's not like the movie is going to be any different from the previous ones. It's pretty much guaranteed to be more of the same. I have tickets booked too but I know what I'm going to get and I know I'm going to enjoy it.

When I know something is going to be sh*t (Humshakals for example), I just wouldn't go watch the movie and torture myself to no end. I would just stay away from it.

The only reason I can think of why people still watch Transformers is because deep down they enjoy it but are scared to admit it in the open because if you do so, people automatically brand you as a dumb moviegoer.

Anyway, I have IMAX tickets booked and apparently 60% of the movie is going to fill the whole IMAX screen. Hyped! :wOOtjumpy:

Exactly I loved all transformers, used them for my HT audition, got all 3 on blu ray, good fun.

It is people like Tyler who make actual sh*t movies like humshakals a hit :P
