(Source) Apparently, an HBO live-action mini series is in works too on which Zack Snyder and Geoff Johns have been, allegedly, working together for months. They are probably testing it with this animated one. Hopefully, it gets made! If I recall correctly, Alan Moore called David Hayter's Watchmen screenplay as close as he could imagine anyone could get for a film adaption even though there were significant changes like the film taking place in 2000's (originally), different ending etc., but he still refused to watch it even then.
