James Gunn had around 500 songs ready, and he added the songs during screenplay. There is a pretty good interview where he mentions this. That guy knows his stuff. Vol 3 will be epic.

Out of the 500 songs that were shortlisted for vol. 2, 300 of those were most likely released after the mid-1980s growing in popularity up and until the late 2000s. He couldn't use those 300 songs in vol. 2 because they were released after Peters' abduction. Gunn was tasked with a monumentally difficult job of not only identifying which songs were right for select sequences but he also had to ensure that the songs he chose weren't too old so that the majority of the audience could recollect them. And to compound this, he had to fish for songs that not only satisfied the recurring family theme but also possessed a cheerful quality that would help the audience transition from the goofy motif in the first movie; a theme that was very deeply ingrained because of the special climax. Gunn must've realized that as years passed filming the GoTG sequels, the audience would only grow younger than before. I suspect that the change in the average age of a potentially new fan grew exponentially while the available list of popular songs from before the mid 1980s became obsolete. Gunn must've realized this even before filming of vol. 2 started. That's why he was forced to stitch into the plot the following scenes where

Meredith and Ego where shown to have fallen in love in the summer of 1980

;

Ego destroying Quill's favourite walkman

and

Kraglin giving Peter a now-dead Zune (most likely filled with those 300 remaining songs).

What a headache! :ko:

What should be interesting to expect in vol. 3 is if Gunn will include easter eggs in the form of scenes that

1) reveals the owner of the Zune

2) references the success of Apple's iPod line of PMPs

Gunn added Zune because he was a fan of that device when it was released. I don't think there will be anything additional that will be done about it.

Could it be that Gunn is making an appearance in vol. 3 by playing a character who was the original owner of the Zune on Earth?

If this is true, would that mean that vol. 3 will have Peter travelling back to Earth?

:fear:

Watched ALIEN: COVENANT (almost wrote Isolation lol), sharing a short spoiler-free review that I posted on Facebook...

It's funny to think that for franchise that has been a mainstay for Hollywood sci-fi there are actually only two truly good movies in the series. While I liked Prometheus for it's visuals, creature design and grand themes it was ultimately a disappointing film (albeit one that I like to return to from time to time). Alien: Covenant is pretty much a direct sequel to Prometheus and for better or worse has a lot in common with it's predecessor. It's certainly not a bad movie on it's own and I personally enjoyed it for the most part. However it definitely isn't in the same league as Alien and Aliens.

Ridley Scott once again takes huge liberties with his own creation and somehow can't help but move further and further away from the original. I found the first half of the movie pretty engaging as you get to know the new ship, it's crew and their mission. And it remained suspenseful until the last third which felt super-rushed and not as scary or as tense as the first two acts. There are some great scenes and Ridley doesn't hold back on the violence and the body horror aspect of this franchise.

Alien: Covenant does tells you what happens after the open ending of Prometheus but I didn't find the follow up entirely satisfying. It also ends up raising more questions by the end and it's clear that Fox wants to set up more sequels. The creature design is decent but there is a slight overuse of CGI in some sections which kills the tension. It's amazing how a man in a rubber suit was far scarier in 1979 thanks to some tight direction and great use of lighting. In comparison Alien: Covenant (and Prometheus) look too clean and sterile.

One thing I liked is that the movie didn't feel predictable and there was some genuine suspense throughout. Most of the actors do a fine job (as usual Michael Fassbender is the standout) and there's far less stupidity compared to Prometheus when it comes to character decisions. Objectively speaking, yes Alien: Covenant is probably the third best entry in the Alien franchise but there's still a big gap between it and the first two movies. It's surely worth a watch as on it's own it is a pretty tense sci-fi / creature flick with some gorgeous visuals, but to fans of the series I'd suggest keeping your expectations tempered.

That said, onto some spoilers!

- Shaw was a badass character and she's unceremoniously killed offscreen. That was almost as bad as Newt and Hicks in Alien 3. This was probably my biggest complaint about the movie.

- We don't have anything like the stupid Prometheus scientist duo here but a few things come close - like the mostly level-headed captain while being a complete badass earlier in not hesitating to shoot a Neomorph (yes that's a thing now) deciding to casually check out an alien egg even after knowing the android showing it to him is a dick. Then you have various other crew members deciding to split from the group for silly reasons - needing to smoke, need a "wash"... WTF Ridley? It's 2017, we already had a movie like Cabin in the Woods and you're TRYING to make a smart sci-fi movie here... apparently.

- Nothing at the end of the movie leads to Alien or Aliens, so yay... more prequels! Also the eggs didn't need a queen which means Ridley is probably trying to write off Aliens.

- The movie was decent right up to the point where the actual Xenomorph shows up, then it's all downhill, which is a damn shame. The scene in the med bay with the back-burster(?) was pretty awesome, and gory as hell.

- Daniels was no Ripley, or even Shaw.

- There was some unintentionally hilarious dialog when David teaches Walter to play the flute.

- Prometheus ended with Shaw claiming that she will find out why the Engineers wanted to destroy us. Well we're not going to know now, are we? Also was it actually the Engineer homeworld? Those guys looked pathetic and helpless unlike the Engineers we saw in Prometheus.

I suppose it's a decent sci-fi horror flick if you watch it with no baggage but as a part of the Alien mythology it is all over the place.

Funny how the xenomorph seemed more menacing in Isolation than in Covenant. I think fans of the franchise are actually better off playing that game than watching this movie.

The movie's still decent but it's entirely forgettable.

@Tyler,

Did you watch Life? Though it wasn't particularly great either, I actually thought it was better than Covenant.

So Dangal did 90cr in 1 day on its 8th day in China. Total collection there is 300cr now. All set to cross India collection.

Really good news for Indian cinema imo. All directors should explore china more, more money means bigger budget for future films..

As big as that number is, team of dangal would get a very very small pie of that money. Most of the money goes to chinese theatre chains. This is how movie releases work in china, at least for indian movies. While it helps in building the fanbase of Aamir khan, the actual monetary benefits are miniscule for now.

I missed it in the theaters. Still want to see it. Hope it hits a streaming service soon.

I think these days it's easier to make a derivative but standalone movie that isn't connected to a franchise. That way it's even received well. The main problem with Alien: Covenant is that it's a pretty decent flick on it's own and I have no doubt that audiences who aren't too familiar with the franchise will end up enjoying it (judging from the reactions in my theater). Fans of the original and Aliens will surely raise eyebrows at some of the events. I'm also not sure if I like all the explanation these movies are providing. Part of the appeal of the original Alien was the unanswered questions - what was the derelict ship? what exactly was the space jockey? where did the creatures come from? It had an almost Lovecraftian / cosmic horror feel to it. Aliens kind of lost that feel but it made up for it by being a kickass action movie with memorable characters and one-liners which at that time only James Cameron could do.

And Hollywood wants a big part of the Chinese pie. Almost every blockbuster these days will have some form of Chinese pandering.

China also has some really weird censorship laws. You can release movie which feature ghosts for example.
