In 1940 MLJ came up with American superhero called The Shield and Marvel came up with Captain America a year later with a similar design. Captain America's shield originally looked just like The Shield character which belongs to Archie comics. The comic quickly became popular and this came to MLJ's attention that CA's shield is similar to their design. So, Goodman had Simon and Kirby create a distinctive round shield for issue 2 itself. Here's a good video on Archie who took over everything, including The Shield and changed everything.
