Aftrunner Posted March 14, 2018 Report Share Posted March 14, 2018 Saw Tomb Raider. Pretty faithful to the rebooted game with tons of little nods toward it. LOTS of fan service, right till the end. My wife is an absolute junkie for adventure/lost ruins/ancient secrets kinda films. So she really liked it. I thought it was just about ok. Not terrible but nothing memorable either. They really should have hired some better writers though. A lot of the Lara-daddy dialogue was pretty bland and since that is the core of the story of the movie, it really felt like a let down. I just didnt care at all about their relationship and the writing never made me. The action sequences were actually pretty decent. Alicia Vikander is pretty good. She is likable but could have been used better. Walton Goggins was the best actor in the film by far and he did what he could with the material but still the script is a huge let down. Overall, you can give it a miss and watch the Blu Ray/whatever. Its decent but I wouldnt call it must watch in theaters. If you are a massive TR fan, its probably worth watching in a cinema though. I mean the game was a massive disappointment but that was for mechanical reasons, ie sub par gameplay. I honestly dont care about awful writing in games (by now I just expect it to be awful), I do care when sub par writing is in the movies. Although to be fair, the writing isnt video game level bad in this movie, its just not great either. Thing is though, all the ways the TR game f**ked up are the things that should (and actually do) work in a movie. A set piece in a game like TR is boring as f**k because you aren't really playing it and the developers aren't talented enough to sell you with just the wow factor (like UC and CoD can). So in TR the game you are just watching sub par CGI unfold. It works in a movie though. The only exceptional bit in the film is a set piece in the middle. Great action, editing and visuals. Tomb raider game was massive disappointment by what metrics? Both 2013 and 2016 games are universally praised. Some outliers did not like the game but that is the minority.
