Tyler
Watched District 9 last night in a packed theater (believe!). The movie was totally worth the wait and anticipation. Loved every moment of it and I can't wait to watch it again... and again... and buy the blu-ray... Anyway, here's a spoileriferic analysis... 1. This is one of the few movies where execution trumps the script. The script was pretty standard. In the hands of a typical Hollywood action director it would have ended up becoming a mediocre movie with lots of explosions, flashy VFX and whatnot. However Blomkamp's style totally made it an entirely refreshing experience. Even the implausible setting appeared extremely convincing. 2. Loved the characters. Wikus was a likeable bloke and I'm sure the rest if the audience loved him as well. Christopher channeled the Arbiter from Halo and the alien kid was awesome! The South African accents really helped give the movie an unique feel. I heard a lot of people saying "fuukh" while walking out of the theater. Full marks to Sharton Copley, his performance was brilliant despite this being his first feature length movie. He's definitely the best movie "hero" of 2009. 3. Neil Blomkamp really loves his videogames and it shows. The movie has tons of references to games and set pieces that could easily be from a game. I could almost see "New Objective: Use the Alien Mech to escort Christopher to the dropship" during the end sequence. The MNU attack was almost like a co-op shooter. And I loved the little reference to Half-Life's gravity gun during the mech sequence! And the bloody mess caused by the alien weapons was second only to the last Rambo movie in terms of onscreen carnage. 4. Action sequences... by far the best I've seen this year... surpassing movies like TF2 and G.I. Joe. An alien Mech fighting against mercenaries and voodoo gangsters may seem like an unrealistic idea but the movie sells it so well. At no point the action set pieces felt ridiculous or out of place. It was almost like watching a live news feed. Kudos to the VFX team and Blomkamp's direction. And Paul Greengrass... better take notes. This is how shaky cam is properly done! 5. Audience reaction... I was expecting people to get up and leave or at least start getting uncomfortable. But it was a huge surprise to see an overall positive reaction from the crowd. Sure it took them a while to get used to the narrative and there were a few "oohs", "aahs" and "ewwws" in the first half but as the movie started getting into full on action mode, everyone was hooked. Some of the scenes such as the mech coming to life and taking out the Nigerian gangsters drew lots of cheers from the crowd. 6. Overall I feel D9 is the part of a new generation of sci-fi and action movies. Children of Men tried the same thing about two years ago but sadly it never got a lot of recognition. I can see more movies being made in the same pseudo-realistic style. Much like how bullet-time and leather became the fad after The Matrix... *shudder* Edited September 13, 2009 by Tyler
Keyofx
Didn't Aftrunner also hate on God (Arnie) a few pages back? That settles it. He's dead inside.

Keyofx
I'd gut my self if I had an errant alter ego, so no! This is pure unadulterated blasphemy on Afty's part
Aftrunner
Oh I only remembered this bit because of Tyler's 6 points and 800 words long marriage proposal to Blomkamp but the movie also used the Sniper rifle from Halo. They changed the scope from a square one to a circular one (to deflect a lawsuit I presume) but its the same thing. So f**king win on that part. \o/

IshmaelIsBack
Okay so you people have seen D9. Now how many of you know that the guy who played lead ,Wikus ( Sharlto Copley ) was actually in the live action short named " Alive in Jo'burg " ( done by Neill Blomcamp as well ) ? . btw Alive in Jo'burg was actually the inspiration for D9. Bulovski
^^ Admit it, you guys are is doing this on purpose... fixed and I am not at all surprised you went crazy over it @afty - I am surprised. This is a mature scifi movie. It was never about explosions. I shall disregard karoo's comments because ... well, he is karoo after all
Tyler
Also, I must say that despite the bleak nature of the movie, the small bits of humor actually worked. I would never have any kind of pornographic activity with a creature, okay?

Yeah I know, that scene was quite emotional and his acting was really good but that line cracked me up...
Bulovski
his acting stood out in the movie. as someone was explaining to me today - we expect aliens in movies to be depicted as super beings who are out to conquer us - and District 9 goes against that myth completely. I would never have any kind of pornographic activity with a creature, okay? That's one scene which proves why Blomcamp chose him to play the lead , he was well aware of what Blomcamp needs to be portrayed. Also , Copley is one of the producers of Alive in Jo'burg.
