there is nothing to follow in it. Or is there any?

Not really. The movie stands on it's own well. There are some slight nods to the franchise which fans may recognize but overall it's very accessible to non-trekkies. I personally enjoyed the movie a lot. I liked the 'summer blockbuster' treatment of the franchise (although I know a lot of hardcore fans hated it). Even I watched the movie again recently, it has brilliant pacing, entertaining dialog, great action scenes & VFX and good performances from the cast. Can't wait for the sequel!

Oh and here's something interesting... the guy who plays Kirk's dad (Chris Hemsworth) is playing THOR.

Ok, I am missing something here. You said franchise? is it a sequel or something? Is there any previous parts made for this movie or any book? call me n00b but answer it

I am talking about the one which is released in 2009. One of the best movies of 2009 IMO

Wait, you mean you never heard of STAR TREK before the movie?

Anyway, there are 6 separate long running TV shows, 11 movies, a comic book series, various novels and games.

The 2009 movie is a reboot of the Star Trek franchise. The destruction of Vulcan and the time travel plot was included so that there are no continuity issues with the original series + movies. This is an alternate reality as compared to the original one.

Oh and the older Spock (Leonard Nimoy), from the 2009 film, played Spock in the original series.

I just booked my tickets for Avatar (3D) in Urvashi Cinema, Bangalore for Thursday night preview show. For the people who were paranoid about the ticket prices for this movie in 3D, I just paid Rs. 250 (the ticket price includes a non-refundable deposit of Rs. 100 towards rental of 3D glasses and a combo of 1 Popcorn + 1 Coke)

It cannot get any better than this, a 3D movie with free popcorn & coke, all for Rs. 250 :O

That explains Ninja Assassin

Hoo boy. Star Trek is a revolution for sci-fi on TV - the original only ran three seasons but kicked off a great franchise. The sets seem dated and the actors ham a lot but great show. Next Generation rebooted the franchise.

Wrath of Khan :O
