So watched The Coca Cola Case

image.jpg

Now I must add it's not a neatly stitched documentary. Really boring at times, specially in the beginning. But it does get the point across. The dictatorship of MNCs all over the world, in this case, Coca Cola (in their Colombia plants, with some mention about the Indian & Mexican plants too). It's all about how they break up union formation in their factories, specially by killing the active members and the president(s) of the union (with the help of Paramilitary forces), over and over again while the govt just keeps on denying any charge.

What's equally sad are the working conditions of the employees and the terms they have to agree to.

They have to choose a route for delivering Coca Cola, for which they need a guarantor. Then they have to RENT the Coca Cola trucks for the delivery route (mind you they are employees and not independent workers). Whatever happens on the delivery route(s) is their problem, whether it's getting robbed, broken bottles, forgotten crates or even getting killed (which aint uncommon) by the PMFs. All this for $1 an hour (Working hours from 6am - 9pm). While the CEO makes $6250 every hour. Along with this, they have to cope up with their children getting kidnapped and relatives being killed.

Without a doubt this docu isn't in the league of what Michael Moore makes. It basically comprises of meetings, phone calls, more meetings, lawsuits. And this keeps on spinning. But it definitely raises some valid questions regarding our social morality. Like they showed a demonstration happening in one of the universities, with students favoring Coca Cola and putting up signs like "f**k Human Rights". Even after knowing what's happening in the CC plants throughout the world, they feel that "it's a capitalist society and that what's happening is pretty common and fighting over it is unneeded. All I want is my can of Coke. I love Coke."

The movie fails to arrive at any conclusion, but it definitely gives you some food for thought. For all you know, the corporates rule the world !!

:) Oh no, you di'ant *complete with attitude*. The Carry on series of movies are a fantastic set of British movies which are hilariously funny. Unbelievably sexist and so a laugh a second.

Go forth and learn heathen child! Civilisation awaits you.

Watched 'Sawdust and Tinsel' last night for my weekly Bergman dose. Excellent arguments and exchanges, no one can really do them better than him. The cinematography is both brilliant and torturous.

There is a reason why many cannot pick a favourite among all Bergman films. All of them are simply fantastic.

I enjoyed Scary Movie 3 but I can't stand tripe like Meet The Spartans... even as a one-time-watch.

They just don't mind spoofs like they use to... Robin Hood: Men In Tights, Dracula: Dead & Loving It, The Naked Gun, Hot Shots...
