@winged return....why buy dvd man?? and not even like you dont have a blu-ray player(ps3). dvd at this age is really a bad idea imo.

The media doesn't necessarily have as big a role to play in quality. What it really depends on is the encode/master. I've seen some grainy-a*s blus as well.

Rule of thumb would be to buy your recent summer blockbusters on bluray, because those are more likely to filmed with expensive cams and in 4K and what not. They're also more likely have larger budgets for mastering, fancy PIP documentaries, etc. (which is something DVDs cannot do).

That said, the real fun starts when 4K displays start coming out :D

I know not all blus are also that good. But there are more than few reasons i always suggest people to stop buying dvd .

1.the Home televesion screen is getting bigger and bigger. I understand in India many still have same 21 inch colour tv and even i have that only but still many have also moved to larger screen and soon these larger screen will start replacing even at middle class homes and when that happens watching dvd movies on these big screen, really looks bad...kinda feels stretched and resolution also looks bad for that size of the screen.

2. Dvds disc are scratch prone some are highly scratch prone while others are also to some extent. Over the time with few times playing them they start to fail to play also properly.

3. IF someone is really buying these movies, they really mean to collect otherwise they would have gone "jack sparrow way".Since they are collecting it means it is for long time use .So whats the use if in about just a few years all their dvd collection would not be not of much use as they shift to bigger television etc.

Ignore him please, he has more dvds than blus thats why..

Yes but i have learned my lesson just suggesting others who still not looked at the bigger picture.

1. This goes back to the master mattering more than the medium. I watch plenty of DVDs on my 40" without any artifacting of any kind. Of course not all DVDs are well done, but that goes for blurays too. The AR also doesn't depend on the medium so I can't see how it stretches for you unless you're watching 4:3 native and that's being stretched.

2. Yea, they do scratch, hehe. But that shouldn't matter if you take care of your discs. But of course, having scratch-free media is always preferable.

3. Upgrading to a bigger Television should always depend on your room and needs rather than what latest tech the companies are trying to sell you. That said, and supposing you do buy a 55" TV for some reason, I can't see how DVDs can look any worse than a lot of the blurays. What you said applies for both media, and that's because its the mastering that counts.

Also keep in mind that a lot of movies/shows aren't even available on bluray yet or are region locked or are exorbitantly priced. Some of the movies I own on DVD are collector's items - which is precisely why they aren't on bluray.

As an example, I picked up a 2 Disc special edition of [Rec] yesterday on Amazon. The 2 disc edition with all those extras has been out of print for a while until they suddenly got 10 copies from God knows where. So the [Rec] bluray is region locked and doesn't have the extras from the 2 Disc edition so surprises which one's the better buy. Ditto for all the anime that I own.

So my advice would be to go for the content, not the media. The media doesn't matter much in most cases.

I'm really tempted to buy the dark knight dvd as ts like 600 or something wheras the bluray is 1.4k .... Also considering a christopher nolan movie bundles up for sale on flipkart wich costs 1.3k ... And has some 4-5 movies .. I just got a ps3 n I wana play a bluray on it and I think the dark knight is the only one worth the money ( as I don't have a lot to spend) ... No one selling on tp also ..... Is there significant difference bw the two versions??

I have my PS3 hooked up with a 40" but I don't really use it. I watch movies on my 21" PC screen where there isn't a very noticable difference b/w BRs and DVDs. Though BRs have better quality, the reason I buy DVDs, as I said earlier, is because of the astronomical difference in price. That being said, I would surely buy BRs for "blockbuster" movies to do them justice.

Next BR I'd pick would probably be the Batman trilogy, when it comes out. (I'd say ~3 months after TDKR releases)

won't be releasing atleast 6 months after release, 3 months down the lane it will be still running in theatres..also you don't need to buy blu rays from india, you can always pick RF BR's from amazon.co.uk or thehut.com, even amazon.com ships blu rays to india.

Go for the bluray if you can. It's got extra featurettes (viewable in PIP mode while you watch the movie). If you aren't a fan of extras and won't watch them, just go with the DVD.

Also keep in mind that The Dark Knight isn't the best reference quality Nolan bluray you can buy. Inception is much, much better. The picture quality on that is :O
