i got a Nikon D40 dslr + AF-S 35mm f1.8G lens (with bill and warrranty) + Lowepro Slingshot 300 AW bag + photography ebook, latest one, on flashes by Joe McNally...

plus planning to get a lightstand (cheap one) + Vivitar 285HV flash and other odds and ends!

nice dude! good choice of lens; did you buy it after looking at the 50mm one? Also, I wonder if Nikon is more famous in India versus Canon in entry-level DSLRs.

yes...i did....agonized a lot over the 35mm vs 50 mm...ultimately it boiled down PRICE and how much focal length do i need...

see 35mm (in DX) multiplied by a conversion factor of 1.5 (actually 1.54 i think) for film cameras actually gives the focal length as 50mm effectively, which is great for portraits...plus the construction of the lens is as good as the 50mm...so small, sharp, fast and cheap! and stupid Nikon underestimated the demand for this fantastic piece of equipment...its one of the best DX lenses available so when i got my hands on one, i snapped it up!)

50 mm also i will buy (primes are fun  ) after i get my hands on the 18-105mm VR DX lens (actually i would like the 16-85mm but cant afford it right now as i want to spend money on strobist stuff...damn Nikon for putting the prices of the speedlights way beyond the average consumer and for taking the SB-800 out of the market thereby forcing people to go for the SB-900 which is great no doubt, but expensive...!

Nikon is more popular, not only in India and not only for entry level DSLR's, though its prices are more expensive than Canon, because of

1. support structure...some of the best and fanciest photogs out there use Nikon stuff (lens, flash and more)

2. Compatibility...you can pick up a ten year old lens and it will still work on a DX body today though with some reduced functionality...unlike Canon which broke the backward compatibility when they moved onto the new generation of camera's

Ultimately, it boils down to preference and whether old stuff can be reused or not...

hmm. I have been wanting a prime lens for meself for a few years now. I love shooting without flash and need a faster lens for that. All I have right now is the standard 18-55 that came with my D50.

18-55mm Ed 1 is a great lens...total VFM, actually all three are...if you got some money, go for the 50mm...that extra focal length is good...else the 35mm is there always...
