PS3 doubts from a n00b

Hi, ok, a guy who hears every technical language in Latin here. I have a 360 in India, and on a very short trip to the US, i went ahead and got a US PS3(80 gb). I did clear up quite a few doubts with Sameer.. Thanks a lot mate, that did give me peace of mind.

Now i'm finally getting this thing back and i need to install this in India, i'm faced with practical problems..

I'll list down the things thats confusing me

1. the voltage is different in India right, Its 110 volts(US) and 220 volts(India) if i'm not mistaken. Now the obvious answer is to get a converter. However, i hear that these converters comes in different "Watts". What is that thing? its different from volts i suppose. How much "Watt" converter should i get for this thing to play smoothly? Can anyone recommend any company/model?

2. Some one tells me that the PS3 versions are different from each other when it comes to backward compatibility to playing PS2. I hear the 60 GB is fully backward compatible. Does anyone know if the 80 GB model is backward compatible as well?

3. I heard another string of Greek when someone told me to confirm the compatibility of HDMI versions of the ps3 to that of my TV. I have a samsung Bordeux 32 inch tv with two HDMI ports. this TV does not support 1080p, but does support 1080i. Is there anyone who uses this TV with the PS3? if so, are you facing any problems with HDMI and things like that?

4. Lastly, can anyone who's brought a console from US to India give me some advise on how to go about transporting it? will it return in one piece if i put it in my checkin luggage?(I'm skeptical seeing these guys throwing the luggages around) or dis you guys bring it with your hand baggage? Or should i get Fed-ex to send it to my address in India? I really need help on this one..

Thanks guys, sorry for being a n00b..

You put ps3 in ur checkin luggage and all u get is a handful of electronic parts upon ur arrival in India ! Trust me on this one....some of my hard steel vessels were bent out of shape when I opened my baggage in India !

Yup, put it in your cabin bag and carry it, ur better off paying some extra custom duties (in case the customs demand) rather than risking ur precious electronic equipment !

queries 1-3 have already been answered, but i'll reiterate:

1. no step down converter needed - just plug and play (might need a flat pin to round pin adapter tho :nerves:)

2. 80gb's dont have full backwards compatibility, but they play most ps2 games (only originals and ntsc-uc)

more details here @ http://www.us.playstation.com/Support/CompatibleStatus

3. your tv will work without a hitch (your ps3 can output 480-576i/480-576p/720p/**1080i**/1080p)

4. customs 'shouldnt' be a problem so you could carry your ps3 in its original packaging in your hand luggage itself. OR you could remove the ps3 from its box, wrap it in soft clothes and put it in your suitcase (provided it's a hard-case suitcase)

I wonder if you will be landing at Bangalore. If yes, customs wont be a problem. The attendants near the trolley will breeze you right through customs without even a cursory check. Ofcourse they will ask for some dollars. 20$ will be more then enough to cover that. I paid them EUR20 when I landed. They would have settled for less but I had only that in my purse at the time, the rest in my International Travel card.

I think the situation will be similar in all Indian airports. Though I went through a rough time at Shivaji International to get those two Johny Walker Black Label get through. f**kers insisted I have to check it in separately eventhough they were in the special sealed packing to be allowed into cabin.

tip, wrap console in a t-shirt, will keep the moisture away. airplane can fluctuate in temperature and moisture, this will prevent console from becoming damaged during flight.

baggage damage is subjective. It can happen over a domestic flight as well. However you should consider bringing PS3 in its original packing inside your checkin luggage with cushioning around it. PS3 box comes with a moister free wrapping. Keep it on if you haven't thrown away already. I got mine from UK without a single scratch and zero custom. port of entry was mumbai.

ur tv supports a max of 1080i. PS3 can handle 720p,i, 1080i, 1080p but for some strange reason PS3 defaults to 720p and doesnt play 1080i. but not to worry. it absolutely wont make a difference on your 32" lcd. the pixels on the display are so close together that u cant recognise the difference with your naked eye. Infact, to see the difference between 1080(1920x1080) and 720 (1280 somthing x 720), you need a display bigger than 50" .

your other questions are already answered.

PS - the game Warhawk supports 720p and 1080i . do any of u guyz know how i can make it run on 1080i ??? i tried :)

Thanks for all your replies guys, I have now a fairly good idea what i should be doing. I just hope this thing doesnot blow up or anything after i get it back home.. No warranty right.. :eyebrow2:

PS - Sameer, and other mods, will it be possible to introduce some business idea in conjuction with MS india, Sony like gamefly in the US? This thing is pretty sweet. Monthly fees - One or two games at a time(depending on the membership) and gamesmailed to you .. and you mail it back(so no need for any shop infrastructure). I mean, doesnot make sense if we have only very few members, But if we do have a good number of members, This would make a ton of sense..

Turn off 720p option from PS3's video output options. it will automatically switch to 1080i. Learnt the trick from CC.

Dont even think of checking your console in, youll be very lucky to get a working console when you land in India.

I got my console back home a few weeks ago. I was initially planning on carrying it in the original box to ensure it is protected but didnt do that because

1. I didnt want to pay customs and the PS3 box would be a dead giveaway although it does come in the allowed limit, my other bags would be searched.

2. I didnt want to risk having to check the bag in incase the box was too big for carry on luggage

What I did was wrap the console in the plastic wrapping and put it in my laptop bag. My laptop bag was a little expandable and it was a bit akward carrying the heavy console and my laptop but it was worth it. You are required to take out your laptop and ps3 at most security checks so make sure theyre easily accessible. Keep a copy of the bill to prove that you are within the limit for Indian customs. If you are really paranoid and dont mind paying the little extra you can also go in for the PS3 messenger case which makes carrying your ps3 really easy.

Dont worry about the voltage, like everyone said the ps3 takes both 110 and 220 with no problems

One of my friends brought a 360 from the US in his checked in luggage. It worked without any problems. But then again, he just might be lucky.

Customs didn't even charge him, he just told them it was for his personal use.
