5.1 help for PS3

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I recently bought a monitor and I wanted to set up a 5.1 sound system in my room to hook it up with my PS3 (slim). Now my problem is that I'm not too sure which one to go for. I'd love some help with this

1. Suggestions for a good 5.1 sound system for around 6k which is compatible with the PS3

2. How do I go about connecting the system to my PS3 directly

3. What kind of input etc should the sound system have?

4. Different wires, Converters etc I'll need to get this thing going (pics would be very helpful)

5. Any other information that I should know or I've not considered,

Thanks a lot for the help guys. Will probably buy everything i need this weekend. So fire away with the suggestions.

There are two ways of getting 5.1 digital output out of the PS3, HDMI and optical output. Both these formats are not compatible with low end audio receivers, compatible systems would be in the 20k plus range. The cables required would be HDMI/optical

Alternatively you could buy a good creative speaker set and connect to the PS3, but output would only be stereo

As you've seen by now. poverty has put off my 5.1 plans. Now I've these creative 2.1 speakers. I've connected both my PS3 and PC to the monitor (PS3 using HDMI and PS using a 3.5mm wire.) but the sound from my PC sounds pathetic. as in quality. What do i do?

I don't know if it's still available but I did see a Samsung 5.1 system with optical input. It was about 12K but this was about 6 months back. I remember looking into it when I was looking for a 5.1 for my PS3 but not a big fan of Samsung anyway but you can look into it though!

Can you elaborate on the connections you've made. Is the sound output thru the monitor or the Creative. Is the monitor outputting to the Creative?

let me know if u come across that again... i'd wanna check it out. 12k for 5.1 Dolby wud be cheap.

@largefeet

what u need to invest in is a 32-40" lcd... or a 3D tv. forget sound, get a good set of headphones (skullcandy active heads r pretty cool)

That's correct however what he can do is connect both devices to the monitor (display and sound) and output the sound from the monitor to the speakers, that way he will have sound from both sources when the respective one is in use. The only downside to this setup would be no output from the one not on the display. No go if you want to listen to music from the PC while playing on the PS3.

The other option would be to use a 3.5mm splitter to input to the speaker. The PS3 would send sound to the monitor thru HDMI, and the monitor would output the sound thru 3.5mm jack to one of the female 3.5mm on the splitter connected to the speakers. The PC would also output to the 2nd female 3.5mm on the splitter. This way both devices could output sound thru the speakers at the same time. The downside is distortion in the audio.

@ nukiller and infinity. - I think what i've done is what rileysnotz said there in the first para.

@ everyone

I've used this...

http://www.oriongadgets.com/images/3.5mm-audio-extender-male-to-male-1.jpg

to connect my PC to the monitor.and the PS3 audio is sent via HDMI. My speaker is then connected to the monitor's audio out. the SP2309 has two 3.5mm ports. I guess one in and one out. Not too sure of the terminology for the ports so I apologise for my ignorance bigyellowgrin.gif I hope what i've done is clear. I could post pics. but now i'm at work. Anyway. the sound systems that u guys were talkin about look real nice but that will have to wait for a couple months atleast. So for a stop gap arrangement need to do something with my creative 2.1's. About the 3.5 mm splitter, do u've pic of it or something ?

Thanks a lot guys!

alizoi.jpg3.5mm splitter!

There are cheaper ones out there for like 30 - 40 bucks but they're really unreliable. I would suggest shelling out about 300-400 for a decent one that will work and last.
