Nvidia's Future GTX 580 Graphics Card

Not that much time has passed since we reported about Nvidia making the GTX 580 official 'by accident' and another set of rumors to feature Nvidia's next generation DirectX 11 flagship is headed our way, this time bringing us the very first images depicting the board.

If these claims are indeed true and the board pictured is truly the GTX 580 then Nvidia must have improved their performance per Watt since this thing seems surprisingly small considering its rumored specs that state this single-GPU monster will come with 512 stream processing units, compared to the 480 SPs used in its current flagship, the GTX 480.

Since this cooler bears an uncanny resemblance with the one pictured in the very fist images that were leaked before the GTX 480 was released it is possible that Nvidia is testing this card at lower clock speeds in order to see how it will perform, the final version of the cooler being finalized much nearer to the launch date.

If this is to be the case, we may as well see a somewhat larger cooling solution being employed in the retail GTX 580 graphics card, details being pretty sketchy at this moment.

Unfortunately, no other infos were divulged along with these pictures so all that we know until know is that the GTX 580 will allegedly come with 128 texturing units and a 512-bit wide memory bus (although there are some sources that state this will be kept at 384 bits as in the present day GF100 architecture).

Whatever it may end up being the case, thing are set to become really interesting in the graphics arena since rumors state that the GTX 580 will be launched sometime this year, competing with the future Radeon HD 6900 series that is going to hit the market in late November, so get ready for an interesting fight. Seen below, the alleged GTX 580 has a black PCB, a full-cover dual-slot cooler bearing one fan, and dual-DVI, plus HDMI outputs. Unfortunately, no specs have accompanied the photos so we're left with the rumors of a 512 (or more) Core card with a 384-/512-bit interface and up to 2GB of GDDR5 memory. Hot stuff for a cold winter. This and Cayman.

Like I said in the ATI thread this is all pretty much pointless right now. Unless we get a new Xbox/PS all this horsepower aint doing much good.

Its like the whole class is getting held back because of the dumbest kid.

stop releasing new cards, start releasing new games...

Hell yeah!

It's sad but true. No matter how powerful a system is, it's end result as it's weakest part (bottleneck). :P

Kinda feel sorry for the PC gamers, no really.

Actually these are pretty good times. My old 8800GTX still works fine on high/med-high settings for recent games cos my monitor has a 1440x900 native res, and I'd imagine many people with such 4 year old rigs would still be able to play recent stuff just A-OK without having to shell out for a new card provided u went high end back then.

I don't remember a time when such a long run was possible for any older generation graphics card + CPU combo (8800 + E6750). I suppose even Afty had something similar (right afty?)

All the manufacturers are doing is exploiting the majority of hardcore gamers who will buy a new card, half for bragging rights and the other half cos they need a 5 fps boost (yeah riiiiight) far above the point where it matters for human visual perception, at the drop of a pin and resign their perfectly working card to the dump / to a PhysX calculations role.

^^ dude stop acting like an ignorat prick...doesn't matter wat you blew your cash on, as some one stated above all latest games work with high end 8 series card too....they need to make cash and pull in people who are still on older cards...

Samsung and nokia releases a new mobile phone every 2nd week, so do you keep changing them everyday???

Exactly what I was getting at in the above post. They're feeding off the consumer's need to spend and get the latest gadgets just like how Nokia, Samsung or Apple do in the mobile gadget world.

You see your cool friend has a Desire HD, you only have an SGS, oh wait lemme sell it and get the HD. When mobile phone makers can do it, when car companies can do it, when watch makers can do it.... so will graphic card makers.

They wanna grab you by your balls and juice you for all you're worth. It's up to you whether you let them. I say just buy a GPU when you REALLY need a new one and not just for the heck of being the coolest kid on the block. Besides, there's no way you can be on the cutting edge of tech for more than a month in today's world.

I think we should have a dedicated thread for graphic cards.

On topic more new models are good for us as they tend to drive the prices of the market down. Last week Nvidia responded to AMD's 6800 launch by reducing the prices of 460 and 470 by $20. AMD is also offering 6800 at very competitive prices. Its great news for folks who can't afford more than $200 on a graphics card. A card like 460/470/6870 can easily serve us well until the next generation consoles or directx12 cards arrive.
