The real problem is deep rooted in Indian culture, Im afraid. For decades we use rivers and water bodies to perform cleaning and ritual acts in the name of religion. Disposing dead bodies for a 'rightful sending off' and having a bath in the river ganga to "cleanse yourself of all evils"; to wash animals in the river Ganga to "Increase their productivity"; to "Please the gods". Some ridiculous things like that. Its not unheard of to hear of a river getting polluted due to acts of man-kind, but the extent Ganga has been polluted is unbelievable, and seemingly irreparable as well. The biggest problem however is that Ganga is an identity for India. Both historical and geographically, the river portrays one of India biggest and best rivers that run across the country, having several outlets. Therefore, something must be done. However, Im not going to endorse spending millions of Rs on a cleaning project. Assuming that the govt actually do that, what is the guarantee our population wont desecrate it again? Like I said, its far far deeprooted in the Indian minds, there must be something revolutionary done. The govt should spend more money on educating the people who live in and around the waterbodies and such areas which require to be clean and protected, and they must teach them certain ideologies. Its not going to be easy or quick. You can definitely expect relegious fanatics to come out with huge challenges for such a thing. "HOW CAN YOU NOT ALLOW ME TO HAVE A BATH IN GODS WATER!! BUAAAHHH!!" I wont at all be surprised if a few of those bearded saints start starving themselves due to such a project. It will be a decade or 2 before the govt or the country and comfortably say that the waters are relatively clean or not as dirty. I understand the govt thinking over the decision to spend over this, but really, something simply needs to be done. Might as well start now. Only if the govt takes a firm stand (and the opposition party doesn't make it an issue.. and educated people come forward to co-operate.. and err.. religion is totally thrown out of the window) can the Ganga be cleaned. RESPECT !! i came here to post the exact same thing. the problem aint the govt (its oh so very convenient to sit and blame every mishap on the govt while we twiddle our thumbs at our controllers all day, yes i am looking at you karoo !), the problem is our culture and religious practices prevalent in india. ganesh chaturthi is the most harmful and disgusting processions that we do, followed by the 'bathing in river to wash our sins that happens there in ganga'. no government can put a stop at there for the fear of religious backlash, not to mention we are a democracy, a very populous democracy. as long as we have these superstitions beliefs, nothing can be done to improve the quality of ganga.
