Nemo
chelsea's five step guide of beating barcelona 1. Give up the ball. Much like Mourinho’s Inter in 2010, Di Matteo’s Chelsea conceded possession to Barcelona. 2. But still dictate the play. They didn’t have the ball, but Chelsea defended with 10 players behind the ball at all times–Drogba sometimes making it a full 11–dictating that Barcelona had to pass the ball around too far from goal to cause trouble. 3. Stay disciplined, stay narrow. Even creative players like Juan Mata and attacking players like Frank Lampard were content to simply hold position and do their job while Barcelona had the ball. This meant no gaps for Barcelona to wriggle through, the only space being out wide, where Barca are least effective. 4. Have an attacking plan that doesn’t leave you exposed. Didier Drogba was heroic versus Barcelona’s defence, and relieved plenty of pressure, often through blatant fakery. But even the big man can’t do it alone. Chelsea looked to counter quickly down the weak/far side whenever Barcelona turned the ball over, which worked perfectly when Lampard played Ramires down the left flank to set up Drogba’s goal. 5. Be lucky. This is maybe the toughest part. But Drogba finished the one good chance he had, while Barcelona player like Fabregas and Busquets were unable to capitalize when opportunities fell their way. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves. We can’t really claim that Chelsea have found the answer to the tactical riddle that is beating Barcelona unless they can do it all again next Tuesday and claim victory over two legs. Madhav
Lol. So, for the whole freaking time, full team remained inside 30 yards, and managed to get a goal somehow; and yet people think this is great performance from Chelsea. 2009's team was much better than this. Honestly it was mostly luck, and those two saves by Cech and Cole. Even the ramirez's pass was total luck and the deflection from valdes for goal. Gotta say, Chelsea defended pretty well, but sadly that's all they did. Shittiest game I ever watched. PPL like you piss me off.. When you dont know anything about how you play against barca (or footbal for that matter), then you dont know jack... i'm not even rude here, but yu should not say anything to be honest.. any team you support has and must have lost to barca doing whatever you think is right.. ramires pass was luck, lampard had a fit so he just randomly kicked the ball diagonally, valdes deflection was ZOMG no goal, drogba struck the ball with luck, blah blah blah!! C'mon just shut it... We performed and ceased our chance.. Period! I'm sure yur eyes were not on the game for the whole 90mins thats why yu think all this. coz if yu saw the match thoroughly, i dont think theres any team who can give a defensive performance against barca like we did.. hell, even i was amazed how well we defended after watching chelsea games this season.. But, we defended and defended and defended like our lives were on the line... When there are likes of MESSI, XAVI, INIESTA, SANCHEZ in one team, you can only defend... & we defended like a boss!! Clean sheet against Barca is a feat in its own... I dont care if we dont get to the final as Nou Camp will be hell to withstand, but I'm proud of this team and the performance that they threw in... AVB must have its jaw on the floor watching the game!! & yeah, quote of truth!! Tells it you don't know jack sh*t about football. This was a total defensive master class from the very best in the lot. I would have posted more but I can't type for sh*t in iPad.

Nemo
Quick ratings Cech - didn't have much to do, and when called upon duty, did it very well - 7.5 Ivanovic - smart in defense, not so much on rare occasions of going forward - 7 Cahill - BOOM - 8.5 Terry - DOUBLE BOOM - 8.5 Cole - one error early on, everything else exquisite - 9 Meireles - not a footballer, but worked hard - 6 Mikel - quietly effective, but a little sloppy a few times - 6.5 Lampard - did his defensive duty very well, and *that* pass boosts him an extra point on its own - 9 Mata - quiet, but worked hard tracking back - 7 Drogba - 8.5 without the diving, 7.5 with the diving Ramires - not his best first touch sometimes, but ran his heart out going both ways and a good assist - 8 Kalou - intense running! - 7 Bosingwa - N/A --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also credit to Barca for playing a reatively clean game by their standards last night, infact big D went down more easily often. Also i think I was correct about my Mata analysis @ simmy @ azaaan. Mata didnt have much to do, he has been our best player this season but he is not suited for the type of game we played last night, with his lack of physicality and being a much free flowing footballer ie not keeping much posession. Best thing would be to play him on sat against arsenal and use him as an impact sub in spain. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Also, http://www.zonalmarking.net/2012/04/19/chelsea-1-0-barcelona-drogba-tactics/ Good read that !
