supersim
The difference being that Lampard has always had the likes of Mekelele, Essien, Malouda etc to do the hardwork for him. They feed him the ball and its target practice for him. On his own, he's quite ineffective. That's where Gerrard is a superior midfielder. He's physical and he has pace. The likes of alonso ,mascherano , kuyt , benayoun dont feed the ball to gerrard ehh ? [ alonso s gone now though] Do the hardwork for him what does that mean ? Its not like essien , malouda always give him a empty net to tap the ball in . The only reason I personally think you guys prefer gerrard is a better player because he s more flashy . gerrard is a poster boy .I am no gerrard hater . He s one the best players in his position. But the way you guys undermine the efforts and contributions of lamps is just atrocious. I know that someone will definately come up with fat frank or deflected shots chant , etc etc . but the fact is it doesnt change anything . Frank is one the greatest midfielders of all times Frank lampard at chelsea 422matches 132 goals Steven gerrrard at liverpool 486 matches 122 goals And its not only goals , Frank leads in assists as well . and england statistics here frank lampard 74 caps 20 goals Steven gerrrard 76 caps 16 goals so much for the drought huh? he still has more goals . Even if i ve said all this there always will be more of gerrard lovers than lampards . I dont blame you guys , gerrard is mr hollywood after all. The way he plays looks so much good on TV . Too bad you guys dont understand the Effectiveness (which according to the case of the haters is the dullness) . That said there s only one player which I think is close to lampard s ability is fabregas. Their passing Frank has already achieved many things in his career , I hope fabregas does the same too. That said all the timethat it took to write this was totally worth it . PS - do not take the comment that i am about to write as a low blow its merely a fact. How many times have you seen gerrard dive ? how many times have you seen lamps dive? Football isnt a single man ' s game . Its a team game. And its not that only a single quality is required to master it . It has to be the perfect mixture of fitness, positioning , shooting, passing , heading, ball control , and what not . The list goes on and on . If you take all the qualities , I personally feel lampard is atleast at par with gerrard (thinking from your viewpoint) But i know according to mine He s better . DevilsOwn
Neither gerrard nor lampard is a "classic" midfielder. Guys who play in the middle of the park; ala Cesc, Scholes, Pirlo, guys who "dictate" tempo. Both like to play much further ahead, closer to goal. Lampard has a great sense of timing regards his runs; and Gerrard a better long range shot. Dont think either would be able to play without a strong def med/ or play the playmaker. They are a different kind of "Attacking Midfielders"; if i had to i would pick Lampard over Gerrard; but give me a Scholes or Giggs circa 2009 any day... Phoenix Wright
^^ If you had just removed both mentions of Scholes, that'd be a good post. Edited October 2, 2009 by Phoenix Wright
DevilsOwn
^^ If you had just removed both mentions of Scholes, that'd be a good post. both the mention of scholes would be for 2 years ago and beyond. And that makes it a brilliant post

Mel81x
IMO, a partnership in midfield (attack-defense or attack-attack) proves to be more useful in the end and almost every top notch team out there has two people that work well to put balls in the back of the net. Saying that one man is the poster boy or A scored more goals than B really makes no sense. Additionally, flash doesn't really get you anywhere in the end if your left dancing while the ball has long moved away from you. As someone said earlier, efficiency first flash second. Alas, like everything else we experience on a daily basis, the flashier it is the more people get drawn to it. As a Liverpool supporter, I am glad that Gerrard is where he plays and I am even more happier that he is paired with FT in the front (although that has yet to prove results this season) but if you forget about Kuyt, Benayoun, etc, etc then Gerrard really isn't much to talk about. Just as a sidenote, our defense is still the most dire thing I have ever seen and its only been getting worse every year, we put a lot of goals in last season but our defense let us down then and as a realistic supporter, we aren't going to win this Prem until and unless we seriously put some effort into defending. Phoenix Wright
both the mention of scholes would be for 2 years ago and beyond. And that makes it a brilliant post My point still stands. Scholes has never been a pure central midfielder, and will never be. He played a vast majority of his career in the hole, and his tackling is absolutely woeful. And Scholes over Lampard or Gerrard is a joke, sorry. No amount of debating can ever change that fact.

Nemo
very well put out supersim, very good post. What so ever the general idea maybe, lampard has score more has assisted more and won more than gerrard. If that is not the sign of being better then i dont know what is. Both are good players and gerrard does have the better football skill, u know the fancy moves and all but lampard has made the best use of his ability unlike gerrard. Frank isnt the flashiest player around, isnt the fastest, isnt the best dirbbler but show me a more consistent center midfielder in scoring in the past 6 years. I dare u. As of now there are two player who i wud like to build a whole team around- Lampard or Xavi. Sameer here says maka etc do the work for him but how does that take away lampsy's achievements ?? can u say ronaldo is an avg player just because he had rooney and tevez do the donkey work for him over the past 2 years ?? Fact is lampard has always generated more hate than ur regular footballer.. something to do with this history apart from the fact that he is a proud player of a club that is on its path of breaking into the elite group of top clubs thereby having even more boo-ers. Lampard is ur classic born with a silver spoon story, son of a pro footballer, having all the best things is life from early on compared to gerrard who was born in middle class and "fought" for his place (as if lampard had not to ) its obvious the media has ballooned it. Add to the fact that lampard is never dives unlike gerrard who u can mention in the same breath as with ronaldo, pires etc. and u have the perfect player and yeah its a fact, search youtube for LAMPARD DIVE and u wont find anything, surprising compared the haters chelsea have got. I am up for a healthy debate anytime regarding lampard, gerrard but hearing stuff like lampard doesnt hold a candle to gerrard is enough to tell me that i'd have have a fruitful-er time watching paint dry. Nemo
and just for the record HPSam. if u read this, my post- mad props for using the best midfielder was as a chelsea fan, i hav the prerogative i hope. I know he is not the best midfielder in the world, but he IS better than gerrard and certainly in the top 3-4 Edited October 2, 2009 by hot chocolate fudge
