shekdown
There is nothing wrong with it going to Qatar. It went to Brazil, it went to South Africa, Korea Japan. FIFA and lot of governing bodies of global events are seriously considering taking the sport global, which means, if they feel a nation has the capacity to host an event, they may be given a chance. Thats why India was given a chance for the Commonwealth Games.
Mel81x
I honestly dont think it will be bad in Qatar. I mean what is everyone really crying about? That the games will be bad? I mean they have a good infrastructure, they have the money to build stadiums [you might see the best in the world very soon] and they have the ability to accommodate masses. I think the English fans are just bitter about Russia and that's all there is. After all that the Russian Federations spokesperson said and the way the media blew it up no one expected them to really be in contention and then to go and win it was a big shock for England. Personally, I don't think England would have done well even if it was hosted in England but that's just me. This way, we will get to see some real grit when the teams go to Russia for the WC. @Shekdown: I think its good that they are taking the sport global and that they are giving other countries the chance to host the event but if I remember right, when the WC was over in South Africa there were lingering issues of payments and employee problems as well right? I am just hoping none of that gets reflected in any of the countries going forward.

Mel81x
Frodo as a Hooligan ... WOOT! Yeah I watched it a while back and liked it. Not enough though imo. The first few parts of the movie that explain rivalry between different groups is good though.

Whats the bloody point of calling it a World Cup when only 5-6 nations host it in rotation. Like you said, as long as the country has the infrastructure and money to do it, they should. Qatar is a rich country that is relatively open to tourists and outsiders. They've got a strong infrastructure and football roots, though it may not be great, its still there. With 12 years time, Im sure they can host an absolutely brilliant World Cup. As for England, I would have liked to see them host it. I think its been too long since the last time England had a World Cup, and they should have got a chance, but the same can be said about Russia. England have a busy decade up-front, they should get 2026 for sure.

Nemo
my problems with Qatar as as follows- -Fifa is a jerk, their moto is 'say no to racism' and then they go ahead and gift their premier tournament to a country that has homosexuality as a criminal offense, ie it differs people. -qatar has a team that ranks 115 in the world. Surely Australia would have been much better. not only do they have a better team but bringing the cup there would really mean bringing the sport to all corners of the world, Qatar is very much a central hemisphere nation. That all being said, Qatar will be able to hold a pretty good event. why ?? p.s. I vote this to be the official WC 2022 theme.
Madhav
I have no intentions of getting into this topic, but I really believe that racism and homosexuality are two different directions.. And just like this WC in Africa, giving it to Qatar, an Arab country, they really are focusing towards different communities... I think its good regardless their team's ranking... But leaving all this aside, the fact that matters most is Arab Money.. A brilliant Cup guaranteed... Don't know how these European teams will adapt to such hot weather conditions though.. Man In The Box
Yeah I agree with Madhav. Being against homosexuality and being racist are two totally different things. By the way, Australia is one of the most racist countries in the world. Infact a BBC report showed that due to the growing racism in Australia, the tourism there has gone down by a huge percentage. We all do know how the Aussies have been treating Indian students over there and so I am very happy that they are not hosting the WC. In other news, there was a match played between Bayern Munich All Stars and East bengal. Munich won 10-3 !!! Madhav
So, Fifa's moto, 'Say no to racism' would have been an epic fail for Australia... that might have been a huge reason...
Mel81x
-Fifa is a jerk, their moto is 'say no to racism' and then they go ahead and gift their premier tournament to a country that has homosexuality as a criminal offense, ie it differs people. How in the world is an anti-homosexuality governed country going to ruin the football played there during a WC? I think bringing the thought about any kind of prejudice [with the exception of death lol] makes a governing organization looks even worse than the kind of rubbish that England is now flinging at FIFA. -qatar has a team that ranks 115 in the world. Surely Australia would have been much better. not only do they have a better team but bringing the cup there would really mean bringing the sport to all corners of the world, Qatar is very much a central hemisphere nation. When was the last time we had a world cup in an Arab nation? I don't see any reason why we shouldn't now, even Mexico has had a WC FFS. Everyone else has had a chance and everyone except the Middle East and Australia have seen one WC in their backyards. You might not believe this but the craze for football in the Middle-East is probably higher than Australia and if Australia really want it that bad then keep trying. They've hosted an Olympics and theres nothing to stop them from getting a chance if FIFA deems it necessary. Outreach should matter more to the organization and in countries where football is a home-found passion [like any country in the middle east], I think FIFA made the right move here by sending it to Qatar and not to any other Middle-Eastern country because there is space to build stadiums and their access will be very good. The costs in Europe or Australia would have been high compared to the other countries in the list and when you think about it, FIFA needs to expand its base and show the footballing community that look we care about the little guy too irrespective of how much money he has. There's plenty of years left to circle back to ground zero and start with the big names once again. I don't like Sepp one bit myself but then again belittling a country on political issues shouldn't be a reason to assume the football that is going to be played at the highest level or with the best of facilities or with the highest security. Over the years people have complained about English fans being unruly and uncontrollable and I'd like to see any fans do rubbish in Qatar during the WC and get away with it. I can tell you now that if anything like that happens it will be curtains down for the offender and out of all the nations on the roster this cannot happen anywhere else except a mid-eastern country. My friend told me what about the alcohol? I said have you ever lived in a mid-eastern country? There are bars and places to party. They just don't leave it screaming in the wide-open for everyone to say oh look that looks like a fun place. Here's a nice biscuit for all you Chelsea fans btw - http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=848305&sec=england&cc=4716

Should FIFA encourage homosexuality or something? Streaking is allowed in Germany, therefore FIFA shouldnt have allowed the WC to be held in Germany? And your 2nd point totally beats your 1st point about racism. Australia is by far one of the most racist nations/continents in the world. Nemo
well yeah.. i suppose lets just stay away from that topic. even Russia are notorious about their racist nature, what with Zenit St Petersberg's policy of having no black players, that did not stop them getting the next cup. as for my equating of racism with homosexuality, it was more as in both cases a certain section of society are segregated by others on factors that are of no concern to them.
