Former Sony Exec Believes Sony and Microsoft Will Join Forces

The former president of SCEE strongly believes that the rising costs of hardware development will encourage the big three to share resources.

Developing a next-generation videogame console is expensive. So expensive, in fact, that former Sony Computer Entertainment Europe president and current Capcom COO David Reeves thinks that the major players in the console business will be driven together within the next 15 years.

It seems like an impossible scenario for Sony and Microsoft to team up, but Reeves feels pretty strongly about the possibility. He revealed his thoughts on a possible one console future in an interview with CVG.

"When you're on the first-party side, you realize how really, really expensive it is to develop a platform," he said. "Whether it's PS3, or Xbox 360 or even Wii, they cost millions - maybe not billions, but absolutely millions."

Making those millions back has become more challenging than ever with competition in the market coming from digital distribution, and worldwide economies taking a plunge. Reeves feels that someday, Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo will get sick of splitting the industry's profits between them.

"Eventually, it may just become so expensive to develop that Microsoft and Sony say, 'Okay, let's get together.' I'd say it's between 10 and 15 years away," he continued. "That's how long I think it will take. I don't think it will be the next console cycle, but probably the next cycle after that, where you might have something platform-agnostic."

Reeves added that there could be another player by then, such as Google, joining the fold to team up with one of the big three. He paints a future where Mario can someday become a secret character in God of War, or where Master Chief is included in Super Smash Bros. 15 years is a long time, but does anyone else actually think this is remotely possible?

I agree with this that in next 10-15 years sony and nintendo atleast wont be able to survive rising cost of hardware and games developing....microsoft on the other hand can come out of it . asabhi it seems something like onlive is the future.

it wont work out for both sony and nintendo bro....you do realize the money need for developing high end gaming consoles and continuing to suffer losses for atleast a year or 2 runs in billions of dollars.SOny's other businesses is also facing stiff competition from korean, chinese markets and continuing loosing share of electronics business . it wont be able to survive unfortunately ....as for nintendo ...this motion and casual gaminga pproach has worked for them this gen and they were great this gen no doubt but the thing is now sony and microsoft both have started attracting that part of gamers too ...through move and kinect and on top of that with hd graphics. nintendo cannot continue doing so coming gen with this mid-end gaming consoles...it will have to spend and take it to higher level IMHO .

know that and want it go even bigger but facts are facts.

Wasn't it agreed by general consensus that Sony lost money on the PS3 early this gen because of their arrogance due to success of PS2?

They cant repeat the "599$" mistake again I am pretty sure.

When it comes to revenues in console gaming, Nintendo is bigger than both Sony and MS combined. They made close to 10B this gen only while Sony and MS are just getting out of reds.

Of course Ninty doesn't have any side businesses like other two, thats probably why they're good at what they do.

Ninty made more money from GC than Sony did from PS2. Yes, as ridiculous as it sounds, its true. They sell hardware at profit from day one, and almost all their first party titles sell millions. Ninty hasn't lost single dime in console business since...ever.

Sony was the one who f**ked up tbh, Ninty are smart with a very good business model, and MS with online.

It was due to that dumbass Kutaragi, even Sakaguchi didn't wanna make any RPG's for the PS3 cuz Kutaragi was arrogant :ranting: But Sony might pull it off once PS3 hits 200$ like the other consoles also they spend so much on their first party studios, I really respect them for that. GT5 in 5 days :happydance:

but how many times does Ninty really hit the jackpot? GC was the utter disaster even though it was an amazing console....so there is no guarantee they would make it next time around as well...

+1.exactly my point and many developers have already started pointing out the limitations of wii ...infact few of them want to remake the games on wii for hd consoles specially for ps3 coz of move.

what nintendo achieved this gen ...if they were to repeat next gen they will have to bring out consoles that match capabilities of ps4 and xbox420 ...otherwise developers may not support them as much as they did this time ...also point to be noted it is becoming very difficult day by day for sony ,microsoft and nintendo to keep the exclusives .

nintendo could pull it off coz xbox 1 did below expectation and i remember on all the sales chart gc was second so in other words ...it was microsoft xbox 1's bad business that helped GC a little otherwise GC wasnt doing great. Now its is changed with xbox 360 microsoft is back in business and everything is working out for them.

+1 to that. Sony gives all the love and care to first party it could possibly.

The ignorance of Nintendo's strength in this thread is disturbing.

not underestimating nintendo at all. just saying that same below par hardware product will not work out next gen...coz by that time major people would have also shifted to hdtv,3d tv,leds......they just need to make sure they have the latest tech.
