Microsoft: "We've no plans for another Xbox"

Recommended Posts

Microsoft have stated that they have "no plans for another Xbox," instead focussing their efforts on backing the recently released motion control sensor Kinect in elongating the Xbox 360's life-cycle.

Such comments were made by Microsoft's Xbox & Entertainment Director, Stephen McGill during an interview regarding the Kinect launch:

"We've no plans for another Xbox," McGill stated during an interview with Eurogamer. "You'll continue to see us bring amazing new experiences to the console, without you having to buy a brand new console. A couple of years ago we didn't have movies, Sky, Facebook and Twitter - now we've got things like Kinect.

"We'll continue to evolve those gaming and entertainment experiences through the power of software updates, rather than new chipsets and plastic."

Such sentiment echoes that of the company's refusal in acknowledging adopting Blu-ray as a sensible move, and stating that the life-cycle of its current Xbox 360 console is far from over. Elongated in part by the new Xbox 360 S model, and now the new Kinect peripheral.

Yet, they must be working on their next console... surely?

MS wouldn't announce anything when the KINECT is selling like a hotcake and Slim has triggered once slowing sales. That will be total harakiri.

There are no exclusive games announced for 360 beyond gears3.

The speculative part of me thinks that Codename Kingdoms seems to be in very early phase of development, so it could be one of the launch titles of new 360, which may surface as early as in late 2011, with announcement coming after the Gears launch. Other launch titles could be HALO expansion by 343 and 4za.

They learned a valuable lesson that how much it matters to be first in the Arena, they wouldn't let go that advantage again.

I want them to test their hardware properly before they launch, who cares about the 1 year lead, if its good it will sell.

They better be doing that. Slim is there, solid and pretty much how it should have been from the beginning but its the lesson learned too late. :|

Besides this, the huge task ahead of them is to decide on media, Blu-ray or their own format. Blu-ray should be the WTG IMO.

@Bagpipes

That's not a part of MS' strategy. They will have limited exclusives, and they will be very meticulous about them. Keep only what sells.

Let's talk about arcade, low budget titles (though they aren't low on production values), Trials HD/Shadow Complex and LIMBO have sold more than many high budget retail ones, they all are exclusive to 360. And this is where MS has triumphed.

I should quote Afty here from the Nintendo Vs others thread.

one reason M$ is adamant on sticking to DLs is that a rectification / upgrade in hardware now will prove the point of critics that M$ screwed up when it was choosing its medium of software. seems more like an ego issue to me rather than a lame justification of how it might still continue to amaze its customers. we've already seen the two discs games twice , and many such instances expected in future so not a good news for 360 customers :P

Holy sh*t! The 2 discs debate resurfaces. Is this 2005 again? For five years they have done ok with DVDs with hardly any game being at a disadvantage because of it. Hell two of the highest rated games on the 360 (Forza 3 and ME2) both shipped on 2 DVDs. No one cared. No one will care for the next few years either until the next Xbox is out. Going by the record of the last 5 years its idiotic to think going with DVDs was a bad idea.

new console will be announced @ E3 2012 for sure :P No exclusives that i can see incoming....just gears 3 seems like M$ wants to simply close the chapter on a very high note (just as it started) with Kinect doing very well already.

I want new consoles because both the current ones are holding the PC back. So f**k em.

I do agree with you that many games are comprised for console ....but that trend will keep on going even when the new console has come out and it is not that console gaming has absolutely reached its limit ...there are still games that looks superb on console

is showing its age though not only for games but as back up media too...IIRC developers were also complaining abt xbox dvd size...i think one of the developers even cut a level from ps3 version to make it equal to xbox version and then released it for dlc .........I am not sure abt this but i think dvd was also one of the reason MGS4 may have not come out on xbox .

blu-ray would be a good choice.

I'll take a new console in 2013/2014, thanks. Just give me better games in the meantime.

+1000000000000000000000000000000. Dont want a new one before that....plus we have to see if we survive 2012.

No, the multi-plats are getting gimped on PC in favor of making the console versions look better. Worse thing PS3 versions are ported and they are made inferior to 360, it shows clear intention to support the platform better on which the sales are higher for the publisher. COD:BO did both of these things.

Off-late another racing game restricted the max resolution to 1280* on PC. can't recall its name top of my head.

If you looking at exclusives, even though they look pretty, they are nowhere near to what PC HW can do with maxed out stuff.

We need new consoles, PS3 may still have some scope left for devs but 360 is limping....

for the question of 360 limping; it all depends how well the next UE update turns out to be ;) xbox 360 is a console running primarily on UE (thanks to close to PC arch); whereas ps3 has usually faired poorly with UE
