HD DVD Xbox 360 binned because Warner switched to Blu-ray?

The weekend saw devastating news arrive that's all but killed off HD DVD as a next-gen video format - Warner Bros. has dumped HD DVD and will release its films only on Blu-ray from May of 2008.

But insiders over at the AVS Forums - who are proper, actual insiders who work for companies like Microsoft, Universal and representatives of the Blu-ray consortium - reckon the decision could've gone either way.

Warner dumping HD DVD for Blu-ray went down to the wire - and it could've been persuaded, along with 20th Century Fox, to go exclusively with HD DVD instead.

In fact, they both nearly DID - an agreement was apparently in place between Warner, Fox and HD DVD backer Toshiba for the HD DVD WIN SCENARIO, only for Fox to pull out at the last minute and go crying off to Sony instead. Which gave Warner cold feet, so it went Blu-ray as well. It really was that close to being an HD DVD victory.

So if Warner and Fox had gone for HD DVD it'd be Blu-ray that'd look like the failed format today, and perhaps Bill Gates just might've pulled out an HD DVD-packing Xbox 360 from under his podium at CES last night, rather than blather on about a few new downloadable films instead.

In fact, I'd bet money that Microsoft's much-rumoured HD DVD-enabled Xbox 360 was one of the deals on offer to tempt Warner to support HD DVD exclusively in a "you support our format, we'll send out a few million more players over the next year" kind of deal.

But now Warner has dumped HD DVD, effectively killing the format, Microsoft has binned the prototype HD DVD 360 as well. Out of SPITE (and business sense).

No doubt we'll find out what really happened here in a few years, once the anger has subsided and the council has helped drain all the tears away. It's all been a terribly exciting weekend in the HD format war, in the geekiest and saddest way possible.

*sigh*

Looks like I will have to be content with accumulating some choice HD-DVDs while the format lasts.

Anyways, cheers to Blu Ray and hope for some GADZOOKS new features from the format.

Oh, and a sincere prayer that the BD consortium can the region encoding.

^^ I wouldn't be so sure. Remember, M$ can make a crapload of dough selling Blu Ray addons for the X360. Heck, even I will buy one.

M$ can make good money outta BD add-on,for sure. But that will not be a good move. Instead M$ shoould consider revamping their x360 Ultimate to have BLU built-in. This is definitely going to hurt early adopters as well as existing customers, but it will balance out the huge PS3 advantage and make x360 hardwares truly future proof.

Remember how almost everyone criticised Sony for incorporating BLU-RAY in PS3. But eventually that BLU factor is turning out to be trozan horse for PS3, no doubt about it. It is a win-win for PS3 and BLU. M$ should learn from that and correct it's move ASAP, rather than bribing studio's around.

M$ wasn't the one bribing studios. They are not stupid enough to waste money on stuff like that. It was Toshibs who was offering "advertising incentives" to the studios to support HD-DVD.

yeah right. Go ahead and screw the 17 million 'early' adopters. Thats some good business. Incase you didn't know, M$ plans its long term goals and nothing in short. Its not a joke to incorporate Blu-ray in the 360. What will they gain ? Games are still running through DVD9 discs and just for movies u wanna have a blu-ray drive ? This will make so much of loss for them because the price of the 360 will go high plus its not good business backstabbing other corps just for making a bit of profit on a sku.

Imo M$ will just lay low and will decide. Regarding the bribing part ? I think M$ and other HD-DVD consortium members have enough than what Sony has but still this doesn't solve the problem.

Although what M$ can do is give consumers another alternative i.e. Blu-ray. So they basically give the consumers both the HD-DVD and Blu-ray option and let the consumers decide what they want. This will be a risk-free way imo.

Plus M$ is more after backing up digital downloads. Remember internet is not fast over here but for others in abroad, they have faster and fatter pipes plus they are offering HD Movies too. Its kinda like iTunes which wasn't too popular when it came out but they are now leading the industry for selling music online.

I think the next biggest move of M$ would be to start offering xbox360 games through Xbox Live. Maybe we will be seeing it in the next gen console. I am pretty dead sure that they had plans to come out with the ultimate sku of HD-DVD but due to the recent thing they just kept it quiet. M$ must be in a one dead position atm

for the average joe, dvd is still the most preferred option. It will take Bluray atleast 2 more years to come to where dvd is already now (if it can) !

prasabhu,

pls do remember that the current hottest selling console, does not even have a dvd playback capability let alone blu-ray support ! Its too early to say if MS made a mistake by not going to the bluray camp - dont jump guns, take a deep breath and relax....enjoy the games :D

Prasabhu is not interested in the gaming aspect. He is a Blu buff and from the movie perspective Sony certainly has achieved a position of strength.

nah, even in movie perspective, sony still has a long way to go ! Sony might have won the hd dvd vs bluray war, but it still has to pull away the majority of ppl preferring dvd - and for that it needs a standalone bluray player to be popular and economical - even now the highest selling bluray player is ps3 !

Prices will come down as adoption increases. What Blu Ray needs now is compelling some additional feature sets over and above high def content. Hopefully the addition of Java will bring these special features to Blu Ray soon. One look at the extras on the HD-DVD version of the movie "300" v/s the Blu Ray version of the movie will show you how much of a head start HD-DVD has in this regard.

i doubt digital ownership of videos will catch on.....i wont feel like i own a movie till it comes on a disc in a box with cover art...and i suspect there are a few others out there like me

peace

Amen bro! I'm a total sucker for cover art and packaging myself.

In fact I'm gonna buy the Limited Edition Transforming edition of Transformers I saw at PlanetM last week just because the packaging is so cool (even though I already own the HD-DVD).
