The Careers Thread

Hi Folks!

Here at IVG, we have a large number of members with diverse backgrounds and from varying age groups. Some of us have been around the block in our education and careers.

Some of our senior members are frequently approached by the younger folk asking for tips and ideas about choices of education courses or career options. The senior members have always been more than happy to help in whatever way possible.

We felt that it might be more productive if some of this advice can be shared with everyone who's interested and hence this thread is the beginning of that initiative. Members who have questions pertaining to careers and / or education choices can post their questions here and senior members who think they can offer insight, suggestions or advice are free to respond to those queries. This interaction can be done in this thread itself or through PMs if privacy is a concern.

Please keep posts in this thread on-topic and avoid pointed remarks on other members

design not programming :boxing:

design is a mix of art & programming

Well if you like design and have an eye for environments and UI id suggest getting into it. The programming is important as well but if design is where your heart truly is then id say go for it. Have you read any books or done any work in design? That's a good place to start. I spent years reading and taking courses on it but now I just use all my design and UX skills for site development and improvement. GUI/UI development is a lot of optimization to make pretty things functional and quick because just designing it isn't important making it work indefinitely is more critical. Loads of books out there too to get you started on it, Flipkart is your friend.

Great Initiative MT. :coolspeak: Since I am a Senior HR Professional, I 'll be happy to help whenever I can. :hypocrite:

As for Gaming design course, I have known and hired Game Designer for a Game Development Project (Soldier Of Fortune) from the Art Institute of Vancouver. A degree /course from there is highly recommended. Closer home just to get an experience into it, once can go and take counselling from MAAC , FrameBoxx, FXStudio and try their short term certificate course as you wait to make your showreel for bigger and better universities.

I am a CA but don't practice. In the murky corporate world of IT consulting.

I need to hit you up on something related to Freelance work and the laws revolving around tax if you have any idea about how that works. Got a CA and he's good but he also happens to be terrible at communication and meeting deadlines. Let me know if you can offer some insight.

Even Full sail college is good for game designing. but it takes only limited student into there course.

Even in india we have DSK in pune which have design course dont know how good they are.

But for game design you need to know about Games engines also such as Unreal engine and much more ..even you need to be good in writing as You have make so many game design document to explain to Developer and producer of gaming company

Even in india we have game producer which is pretty good scope turn around Job. for which you have to MBA from reputed college and have a good exp on gaming.

MOst of the gaming company have opening for game producer as fresher and for exp you must have exp on working with 2 inhouse game production.

@megzworld ------Are you still working with any gaming company presently

^^ I recommend you take admission in any reputed college and do your graduation in Commerce or even Arts if that appeals to you.

Since you have an interest in Graphic Designing, go take counselling from various Animation and Designing institute we have. Do your reserach well as there are many fake institutes with very poor faculty and high fee for course.. and then simultaneously with your graduation, take up a short term career course in Animation Film Making, Gaming Design, Post Production and Compositing etc. Once you get a fair idea of your interest and talent towards your SY in Graduation, you can prepare for the enterance of some big Design/Animation/Film school internationally or NID Ahemedabad.

Graduation is really important. It matters later in your career when even if you are great artist the HR looks at your basic education for promotion decision.

Well, since many students are posting here... lemme also ask for some suggestions :P. I'm going to the University of Auckland next month for my BCom ( specialising in International Business and Management ). So what all fields should I keep an eye out on after the 3 years? Also, what are the advantages of studying International Business in expansion of businesses?

Bul how's the IT sector doing ? as per 2010 stats they've been the 2nd highest recruiters in India but what's the scene like now ?

I have a college that offers MBA in ITBM on my list of applied colleges on the basis of SNAP.

Should i be going for a PGDM in (marketing hr finance operations ) or the above course.

here;s their site http://www.scit.edu/

Also can people (IT) ask their HR's if this college is any good to get a decent employment after completion ?
