i chose engineering over medicine because in medicine i would have to work doubly harder for double the duration to earn lesser than what I would start at after doing engineering with almost non existent effort in only 4 years

My wife is a doctor and I see it first hand how sad is that state of the profession right now.

like somebody told earlier, it is almost impossible to convince the rural people that somebody has died because of reasons outside of a doctors control.

and even she tells me of scenarios when they too did chest pumping to ensure the relatives that they tried, this is a common alibi i guess

And the amount of donations that prevail to get a seat in any college (really ANY collage in ANY city) is preposterous :furious:

Job satisfaction is the most in Medicine

About the donations part ..

It could be avoided quite easily except in Super specializations

My parents are doctors ..

I grew up seeing them work more than 12 hours a day ..

My mom reduced her OPD timings just 2 years back .

My dad still works more than 12 hours a day .. He has a separate room in hospital where he takes a nap in the afternoon and does his breakfast and lunch

That was the reason I had actually dropped Biology and went for Engineering (IIT JEE preparations :fear: )

I even had Scooter maintenance as vocational subject in 11th ..

Just 2 months before my 11th finals I switched over to Biology :P

i could have given you a nice reply to this..but this topic of doctors brought back some not so good memories...so lets leave it to that

@motabhai..and yea one thing i can add on what i said..maybe work culture of bengal can be a reason too...on the pathetic state of affairs in even the best hospitals here...because of all the helpful doctors who were so good and excellent were from the south :majesty: ...its was just amazing to see their way of approach :majesty:

Don't equate WB hospitals with the rest of India ..

The healthcare in WB hospitals is pretty f**ked up

And the scenario you said (5+2+2) is the minimum amount of time if all goes well (i.e. without any year loss in between) which is hardly the case unless you have loads of cash/you are a doctor's son(or daughter).

NAILED IT !!! :rofl::roflroll::rofl:

Instead of spending so much if the guy just puts in more and studies he will end up in a good government medical college

The fees of my government college is 50,000 per year .. I stay in a separate rented room of 5k per month

While on the other hand those people who waste their life by bunking classes and f**king girls are surely going to end up paying hell of money

I have friends who payed 40 lakhs just as a donation plus fees extra which is 7 lakhs per year just for MBBS degree

Only God will save them for PG , Super specialization

Hence the qualifier "(if you're unable to get in the college of your choice by merit alone) "

I don't know about quite easily, even a small small dip in your score can finish you off if you're a forward-caste candidate.

And if your plans are engineering in IIT (especially if you're gonna be doing comp sci / electronics ), I'm expecting you'll be singing a Linux/Unix tune years from now ;)

As you were talking about how respect for the medical profession is on the decline due to the advent of the Internet I made a point that even the most educated people in India have no knowledge of computers ( Even Doctors falls into this category) yes the trend is new but not of the level you are talking about ( I am speaking of WB and some northern states of course). The only patient who asked my father regarding the treatments and all where a couple of persons from the US of A

You are highly mistaken

I stay in a Tier 3 city .. Almost every literate patient asks my dad regarding the treatments , side effects , effectiveness of surgery

Those days are gone when patient treated the doc as the God

+1 it's true for everywhere, right from big cities to small villages, though in the villages that lack of respect only shows up rarely when some patient dies and they start blaming the doctor for it :P

GS Medical college ..

The best college in Maharashtra ..

Cut off rank is 105 for General

Reserved is in 8000s

And my college

General cut off rank is 995

Reserved is in 11000s

The thing in India is , if you have to get a degree from a good college then

1) You should either have a super rich dad

2) Or have a caste certificate

no one doing BMM?

its one of the best things that has happened to education.. its more of a creative take on education and has alot of opportunities bt its a very heck tick course but its worth it..

and most of the people in my class are paid interns at big media firms and production houses. You have a option in your final year between advertising and journalism.

THIS. I know many people who have a backward class certificate just for the sake of education and some financial privileges. And ironically they are better off than general people.

bds itself is a bs course

there is already huge no of dentist

real doctors on other hand are less than what are required

colleges are hard to set up so good private college dont open(shoddy ones do for money)

govt is lethargic in creating more institues

and ppl here shud grow up though there are few cases of blatant misuse of reservation most sc/st student i came across came from humble background and fee wavier they got was helpful
